Jiang Kui –

Complaint of the Pavilion of Adieu
Jiang Kui
Gradually the western breeze has blown
All fragrant willow catkins down.
The leaves so green
Hide houses like a screen.
The winding streams stretch high and low;
Where will the lonely sail in twilight go?
Who’s seen more people part
Than trees of the Pavilion of Adieu?
If they had a heart,
Would they grow green and lush anew?
At sunset I can’t see the city wall
But rugged hills which rise and fall.
Though I’ve left you, can I forget what you said
While putting on my finger your ring of jade:
“O first of all,
Come back as early as you can, for I’m afraid
None will take care
Of the peony red.”
In vain of scissors sharp have I paired;
Of parting grief how can I cut off thread on thread?

注释:
The poet writes on the willow tree and on his beloved songstress whose waist is as slender as a willow sprig.

The lyrics of “Complaint of the Pavilion of Adieu” are written by Jiang Kui, a Song Dynasty lyricist and musician. In the first section, the poem starts with the scene of twilight spring: the flowers and willows are drifting, the sails are disappearing in the twilight, the trees have seen a lot of parting and have become numb, so they are still so green, as the saying goes; in the second section, the poem is about nostalgic and sorrowful feelings, firstly, the traveler keeps looking at the seeker on the shore, then he never forgets the promise, and finally, he writes about the parting advice of the beautiful woman on the shore and the sorrowful feelings after the parting. The whole lyric is characterized by the change of subject and guest and the inner monologue, showing the two-way exchange of feelings between the traveler and the seeker.
