何处望神州？
满眼风光北固楼。
千古兴亡多少事？
悠悠，
不尽长江滚滚流。
年少万兜鍪，
坐断东南战未休。
天下英雄谁敌手？

I gaze beyond the Northern Tower in vain.
It has seen dynasties fall and rise
As time flies
Or as the endless river rolls before my eyes.
While young, Sun had ten thousand men at his command;
Steeled in battles, he defended the southeastern land.
Among his equals in the world, who were heroes true
But Cao and Liu?
And even Cao would have a son like Sun Zhongmou.

“Song of the Southern Country · Thoughts of Mounting on the Northern Tower” is a lyric by Xin Qiji of the Song Dynasty. It expresses the author’s aspiration to be like the ancient heroes, to recover the old mountains and rivers, to serve the country, and to express his strong patriotic thoughts, but it also reveals the author’s infinite sorrow that there is no way to serve the country, and his resentment against the Southern Song dynasty, which was indifferent and uninspiring. The whole lyric is a close combination of writing, lyricism and argument; it incorporates the language of the ancients into the lyric and makes use of allusions and idioms; the three questions and three answers throughout the lyric are clearly layered and echo each other; it expresses emotion in the scene and draws on the past to satirize the present; the style is bright and fast, the atmosphere is broad and the mood is optimistic and high.
