Ye Mengde –

Rouged Lips
· Written in Summit Pavilion in 1135

Ye Mengde

The frowning pavilion dimly appears;
We talk and laugh above peak on peak.
Who would enjoy with me,
The misty waves undulating for a thousand li?

Old as am I,
I still think of recovering the lost frontiers.
In vain I sigh.
Be brave, young man, don’t act as a man old and weak!

注释:
This lyric exhorts the young to be braver than the old.

Ye Mengde –

The lyrics of “Rouged Lips · Written in Summit Pavilion in 1135” are written by Ye Mengde, a lyricist of the Southern Song Dynasty. The first section of the poem is about the loneliness and despondency of the lyricist when he climbed to the “Piaomiao Dangerous Pavilion”, while the second section expresses his feelings of “old steed in the stable and aspiring to a thousand miles”, urging young people to be enthusiastic and bold, and to build a career for the country. The words are plain and natural, clear and simple, with a lot of colloquialisms, which are as clear as words. The content of the poem is euphemistic and ambiguous, with a lot of ups and downs, expressing the contradictory feelings of the author, who is both open-minded and lonely after returning to his home.
