The Golden Zither

Li Duan

How clear the golden zither rings

When her fair fingers touch its strings!

To draw attention from her lord,

Now and then she strikes a discord.

This quatrain speaks of music and the musician.

“The Golden Zither” is a five-line poem written by Li Duan, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The poem depicts a woman playing the zither who deliberately plucks the wrong string for the sake of her admirer, creating a lovely image of a woman playing the zither.
