Tune: Fountain of Wine
Sun Guangxian
The boundless desert looked desolate,
Long, long the road to Southern Gate.
Your horse was heard to neigh,
You were seen on your way,
E’en border clouds felt sad.
The sable coat in which you’re clad
May be outworn, your uniform too tight,
The thousand-li Northwest frontier with frost is white.
In silk I’m dressed,
But my heart cannot fly
In dreams to the Northwest,
So I mount the tower high.
Sun Guangxian (900—968) was a lyric poet of the “School among Flowers”. This lyric depicts a young woman recalling her husband parting from her for the Southern Gate in the north-west border, thinking of him when frost fails in the desert, and feeling grieved that she could not go to see him even in her dreams.
