About Northwest Normal University

Northwest Normal University is a key university jointly established by the People’s Government of Gansu Province and the Ministry of Education. It was formerly known as the National Peiping Normal University, which originated from the Beijing University Normal Hall established in 1902. It was renamed as the National Beijing Higher Normal University in 1912 and the National Peiping Normal University in 1923. In 1937, after the July 7 Incident, National Peiping Normal University, National Peiping University and Beiyang Institute of Technology, which moved to the west at the same time, jointly formed the Northwest Associated University. The National Peiping Normal University was reorganized into the College of Education under the Northwest Associated University, and later changed into the Normal College. 1939 Teachers College of Northwest United University was established independently and renamed National Northwest Teachers College. It was moved to Lanzhou in 1941. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the National Northwest Normal College continued to operate in Lanzhou. At the same time, Beiping Normal University (now Beijing Normal University) was restored. Before 1958, it was one of the six key normal universities directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1958, it was transferred to Gansu Province and renamed Gansu Normal University. 1981 It was renamed Northwest Normal College. 1988 It was named Northwest Normal University. In 2020, it was listed as a provincial university supported by the People’s Government of Gansu Province to enter the ranks of national first-class universities.

At present, the university Party committee consists of 30 second-level Party committees, 2 general Party branches and 1 student community Party working Committee. It has 302 Party branches, including 112 active staff branches, 30 retired staff branches and 160 student branches. There are 80 functional Party branches in the student community. There are 6234 Communist Party members, including 1820 faculty members, 628 retired staff members and 3786 student members.

In 1985, the Ministry of Education, relying on the university, set up the “Northwest Minority Teachers Training Center” directly under the Ministry of Education and organized by institutions of higher learning, implementing the management system of “two brands and one team” together with the university. In 1987, The State Council established a “Tibetan Teacher Training Center” in the university. In 2012, Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council established the “Chinese Education Base of Northwest Normal University” with the support of the university. In 2020, it was approved as “National Collaborative Innovation Experimental Base for Teacher Development” and “Teacher Ethics Construction Base of the Ministry of Education”. In 2021, it was approved as the “National Language Promotion Base”. The university now has 26 secondary colleges (65 departments, 3 teaching departments) and 3 Confucius Institutes. Since its independent establishment, the university has trained more than 280,000 students of all kinds. The university is recruiting students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government), with a total enrollment of 39,232 students. Among them, there are 17,779 undergraduates, 697 doctoral candidates, 9,468 master’s candidates, 366 international students and 10,922 continuing education students. Since 1992, the undergraduate teaching reform project has been carried out for six consecutive periods, and the seventh phase of the project is currently being carried out. In 2003, the Ministry of Education undergraduate teaching level evaluation; In 2008, the Ministry of Education awarded excellent in English undergraduate evaluation. The university has a faculty of 2,537, including 362 senior professional title holders, 828 associate senior professional title holders, 822 doctoral degree holders and 915 master degree holders. Among them, 1650 are full-time teachers, 323 are professors (researchers) and 635 are associate professors (associate researchers). There are 182 doctoral supervisors (including 29 part-time supervisors) and 1506 master supervisors (including 654 part-time supervisors). 69 people were awarded the national talent title and selected projects, and 204 people were awarded the provincial talent title and selected projects. The university has hired more than 200 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad as special or adjunct professors. Famous professors such as Li Zheng, Li Jinxi, Yuan Dunli, Dong Shouyi, Li Jianxun, Hu Guoyu, Lu Sibai, Kong Xianwu, Chang Shuhong, Chen Yong, Huang Zhou, Peng Duo, Guo Jinxi, Li Bingde, Jin Baoxiang, Jin Shaoying, Nan Guonong have taught at the university.

The university is one of the first units authorized by The State Council to confer bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees. There are 11 first-level doctoral programs in education, chemistry, Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, mathematics, physics, geography, psychology, biology, Fine Arts, Marxist theory and so on. There are 30 master’s programs in first-level disciplines, 1 master’s program in second-level disciplines (excluding the coverage of first-level disciplines), and 19 professional master’s authorization categories. There are 2 national key disciplines (cultivation), 11 provincial first-class disciplines and 36 provincial key disciplines. Chemistry, Materials science and engineering are ranked in the top 1% of ESI global ranking. In the fourth round of national discipline assessment, 9 subjects entered the B level. The university has a strong scientific research ability, has always attached importance to the combination of production, education and research. Social science has outstanding advantages and distinctive characteristics in the research of ancient Chinese literature, Northwest history and geography, curriculum and teaching theory, ethnic education, arrangement of ancient books, Dunhuang studies and other subject areas.
