About Shanghai Polytechnic University

Shanghai Polytechnic University (SSPU) is a municipal public university that boasts strengths in Engineering and well-coordinated development of disciplines in Management, Economics, Literature, Science and Arts. With a focus on undergraduate education, SSPU also grants master’s degree and is a doctoral degree awarding construction institution in Shanghai. The university is committed to training applied innovative talents who are professional, responsible and international.

SSPU was formerly known as Shanghai Part-time Polytechnic University, which was established in 1960. The university adopted its current name in 1984. It is the only university in Shanghai named by “Polytechnic University”. For more than 60 years, evolving from adult education to full-time undergraduate and higher vocational education and then to postgraduate education, SSPU has been dedicated to training application-oriented talents to meet social demands and serve national strategies. The university has produced nearly 200,000 technical and applied talents of various kinds for Shanghai and nationwide, and cultivated over 130 model workers at national, provincial and ministerial levels, hence honored as “the cradle of model workers”.

SSPU has significant geographical advantages and strong faculty resources. The main campus Jinhai Road Campus is located in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, adjacent to China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and a number of Fortune 500 companies. The campus covers an area of nearly 800 mu(or 53 hectares) and has a total floor area of nearly 400,000 square meters. SSPU has 17 colleges and schools and over 13,000 full-time students. It has the faculty with high comprehensive quality, strong research ability and rich teaching experience. Nearly 45% of the faculty have a doctoral degree. Over 40 of them are supported by various talent programs, such as Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University under Ministry of Education, Program for Professor of Special Appointment (Eastern Scholar) at Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning, Shu Guang Project supported by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Education Development Foundation, etc.

The university is included in the Construction Project of High-Level Universities in Shanghai (cultivation institutions) and is selected as Pudong New Area Postdoctoral Innovative Practice Base. SSPU nowoffers 1 academic master’s degree program (first-class discipline), 7 professional master’s degree programs, 45 bachelor’s degree programs and 18 higher vocational programs covering 23 program categories in 6 fields of disciplines including Engineering, Management, Economics, Literature, Science and Arts. Environmental Science and Engineering (Resource Recycling Science and Engineering) is listed in Shanghai Type II Plateau Discipline Construction Project. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, SSPU plans to build two plateau disciplines—Mechanical Engineering (Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering) and Materials Science and Engineering (Energy Conservation and New Energy Materials), and an emerging cross discipline—Artificial Intelligence. SSPU has 3 National Distinctive Programs and 3 National First-Class Undergraduate Programs. And the programs of SSPU are selected into over 30 projects such as Excellent Engineer Education Training Program of Ministry of Education, Comprehensive Reform Pilot Program of Undergraduate Programs in Local Universities under the “Undergraduate Teaching Project” of Ministry of Education, Applied Undergraduate Pilot Programs for Local Universities, First-Class Undergraduate Programs in Shanghai, Shanghai Undergraduate Education Highland Construction Project, etc. There are more than 170 National First-Class Undergraduate Courses, NationalExcellent Courses,Shanghai First-Class Undergraduate Courses, Shanghai Excellent Courses, Shanghai Key Courses, etc. In the past three years, the students have participated in more than 200 discipline and skill competitions of various kinds at the provincial and ministerial level and above, and won more than 700 awards in total including over 300 national awards.

SSPU keeps meeting the needs of society and improving its service capability. The university has undertaken over 100 national projects, including National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), major programs supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National Key R&D Program, programs supported by NSFC, programs supported by National Social Science Fund of China, etc. More than 50 talent programs have been approved, such as Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University under Ministry of Education, Program for Professor of Special Appointment (Eastern Scholar) at Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning (including youth scholars), Shanghai Pujiang Program, Shu Guang Project supported by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SMEC) and Shanghai Education Development Foundation (SEDF), Shanghai Rising-Star Program, Yang Guang Project supported by SMEC and SEDF, Shanghai Sailing Program, Chen Guang Project supported by SMEC and SEDF, etc. The university has won 3 second prizes and 4 third prizes in Shanghai Science and Technology Awards. SSPU has some provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, such as Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Advanced Thermal Functional Materials, Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for WEEE Recycling, Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for Reverse Logistics and Supply Chain, Shanghai Standardization Innovation Center (Logistics), Shanghai Vocational & Technical Teacher Education Institute, Shanghai Model Worker Culture Research Center, etc. The university has jointly established Shanghai Key Laboratory for Application and Evaluation of Engineering Materials with Shanghai Research Institute of Materials and co-built SSPU Lab Affiliated to Key Labs under Ministry of Industry and Information Technology with State Radio Monitoring Center Testing Center. In addition, SSPU is selected into the first batch of Education Bases of the Spirit of Scientists in China and the first batch of Science and Innovation Education Bases for Students (Teenagers) in Shanghai. Great importance is attached to the integration of industry and education and all-round cooperation is carried out with famous enterprises and research institutes such as Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd., COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Huahong Group, Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, Shanghai Electric Group, Bank of China Shanghai Branch, Shanghai Institute of Computing Technology, Shanghai Disney Resort, etc. Based on SSPU Science Park, which is a national university science park, and dozens of technology transfer workstations in the Yangtze River Delta region, the university promotes transformation of scientific and technological achievements and industrial incubation. The Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Technology Institute, jointly set up by SSPU and Wuyi County, Zhejiang Province, has been successfully launched and operated.

Shanghai Polytechnic University has established stable partnerships with more than 150 universities and institutions in 37 countries and regions. There is one Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school and two Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run educational projects. Nearly 150 student overseas exchange programs including over 50 degree programs are open to students. Currently, there are over 100 international degree students from 24 countries studying at SSPU. The university offers six English-taught programs, 86 undergraduate English-taught courses and 24 English-taught projects, among which there are nine Demonstrative English-taught Courses in Shanghai and 13 Demonstrative English-taught Courses for International Students in Shanghai. It has 17 international joint laboratories and research centers and 10 Erasmus+ programs which were applied with foreign partners.
