Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1924 as guangdong Special university of Chinese Medicine. Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956 with the approval of The State Council. It is one of the first four TCM undergraduate institutions in New China, and was renamed Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1995. It was directly under the Ministry of Health and was transferred to the guangdong Provincial People’s Government in 2000. In 2017, it was selected as the national “Double First-class” discipline construction university. In 2018, it was promoted to the key construction university of High-level University of Guangdong Province. In 2020, it was co-built by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university adheres to the overall leadership of the Party, the socialist direction of running the university, and the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the Party Committee. The university is one of the first batch of colleges and universities designated by the Ministry of Education to implement the “Pilot Reform of Zhuoyue Doctor (TCM) Education and Training Plan” and undertake the “Pilot Project of TCM Top-notch Innovative Talents Mode Reform”, and was selected as the second batch of national demonstration colleges and universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Traditional Chinese medicine and Pharmacy are among the first first-class undergraduate programs in China. “Emphasis on classics, strong clinical” is the most distinctive feature of undergraduate teaching. In the mid-1980s, the university took the lead in launching the teaching reform of returning classics to clinical practice, and implemented the management system of “integrating universitys and departments” to promote the coordinated development of medical education. Founded in 1978, It is one of the first universities in China to grant doctor’s and master’s degrees. The university’s scientific research work has obvious characteristics and outstanding advantages. TCM master Professor Deng Tietao’s team won the second prize of national Science and Technology Progress in 1992 for “Clinical and Experimental Research on myasthenia gravis with spleen deficiency”. The team of tenured professor Wang Jianhua won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2000 for the series of studies on syndrome Differentiation and Treatment of spleen deficiency. His landmark achievement, the inheritance and Innovation of spleen deficiency Theory and Its Application research, was selected into the Collection of Major Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine inheritance and Innovation in 2016. Professor Yuan Hao’s team won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress award in 2000 for their research on the treatment of femoral head necrosis with integrated Traditional Chinese and Western medicine. As a major member of the national “523” Malaria Prevention and Control project, the university has proved the antimalarial efficacy of artemisinin clinically, making a significant contribution to the invention of artemisinin. The research achievements of Professor Li guoqiao’s team have won the National Science Congress Award, the Second Prize of National Technological Invention Award and the Second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. The project of “Theoretical innovation and clinical Application of acupuncture in the treatment of ischemic Stroke” by Professor Xu Nenggui’s team won the second prize of national Science and Technology Progress in 2019. universitys focus on building international translational medicine research institute of Chinese medicine, acupuncture research center in south China, innovative Chinese medicine research and public service platform, combine traditional Chinese and western medicine basic research center, lingnan medical research center, guangdong academy of traditional Chinese medicine (the guangdong branch of the Chinese academy of traditional Chinese medicine), science and technology innovation center (three yuan in campus), and other key platform, with 55 provincial-level scientific research platform.
The university has been cooperating with southeast Asian countries and African countries to carry out anti-malaria research. The medical team sent to Ghana to provide medical assistance. It undertook the technical assistance project of the Comoros Malaria Control Center of the Ministry of Commerce, the malaria control technical assistance project of SAO Tome and Principe, and the project of Guangdong Province to assist the construction of the Malaria Control Center of Papua New Guinea. The Comoros achieved zero malaria deaths for the first time in the history of the country. Our university’s plan to eliminate the source of infection by using artemisinin compound for all was included in the Handbook of Field Implementation of Falciparum Malaria, which contributed the wisdom of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine to the global malaria prevention and control process.
Based on its own advantages, the university has actively participated in the construction of a strong TCM province. There are 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 hospitals jointly built with the government, and 31 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The first and second affiliated hospitals have been selected into the “Climbing peak Plan” for high-level hospital construction in Guangdong Province. The First Affiliated Hospital has become one of the first batch of pilot units of TCM diagnosis and treatment mode innovation and the second batch of “National TCM Clinical Research Base Construction Units”, and is one of the hospitals with the most REGIONAL TCM (specialized) diagnosis and treatment centers in China. The Second Affiliated Hospital ranked first in “Top 100 Competitive Hospitals of Chinese Medicine” and was rated as “National Civilized Unit”. The Third Affiliated Hospital is the only third grade grade A orthopaedic hospital in Guangdong Province, with the orthopaedic department of Traditional Chinese medicine as the leading specialty of the hospital. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, the affiliated hospital of our university, as the leader of the anti-SARS Expert group of The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, advocated early intervention of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine with outstanding clinical effects, which was recognized by the world Health Organization experts. During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, our experts, as members of the expert group on COVID-19 prevention and control of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, participated in the formulation of the first to seventh editions of the diagnosis and treatment protocols issued by the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The affiliated hospital of THE University has sent 112 medical staff to hubei province. Experts were sent to Malaysia to assist in epidemic prevention and control as the leader of the Chinese government’s medical team.
