About Chongqing Jiaotong University

Chongqing Jiaotong University (CQJTU), founded in 1951, is a multi-disciplinary university which has a “bachelor-master-doctor” multilevel talent cultivation system and covers a great variety of disciplines from engineering to management, economics, science, art and law. The University has three campuses: Nan’an, Shuangfu and Daping. Together, they occupy an area of nearly 2,900 Mu (1,912,827m2) in total, including over 819,584m2 school buildings and 457,316m2 administrative buildings. The total fixed assets of the University are valued at CNY 3,471,116,300, including scientific research instruments and equipment costing CNY 553,994,300 and books numbering 2,022,000.

Currently, the University has eighteen teaching departments consisting of sixty-two general undergraduate disciplines, three centers for post-doctoral studies, four first-level discipline doctoral degree programs, fourteen second-level discipline doctoral degree programs, sixteen first-level discipline master’s degree programs, fifty-four second-level discipline master’s degree programs and five professional degree programs. CQJTU now has 32,114 students at different levels and in different fields, including 27,981 full-time students.

This institution of higher learning has a long history of development and is committed to the field of transport engineering. It has significant strengths in engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, hydraulic, and transportation. Also, CQJTU has established a multi-disciplinary system coordinating relevant disciplines with disciplinary features emphasized and regional advantages highlighted. The University has contributed greatly to national and local economic and social development in the field of transportation S&T innovation and cultivation of high-level transportation talents . Adhering to the strategy of “talent-oriented development”, CQJTU has cultivated and built a high-level talent team which is optimally structured and full of energy. At present, the University has a faculty of 2,049, including 1,556 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 769 have obtained senior or medium titles. In the teaching faculty, 84.9% have at least a master’s degree; 100 are doctoral mentors and 826 are master’s mentors; there is also one distinguished professor under the Changjiang Scholars Program, one leader in the S&T innovation under the Ten Thousand Talent Program of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, eight national candidates for the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, one winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and nearly 120 provincial/ministerial (or above) experts and professors. These professionals compose a vast spectrum of faculty, ranging from young experts to experienced professors, many of which have made outstanding contributions and are officially recognized as nationalexcellent scientists, technical workers, and teachers as well as experts enjoying special allowances of the State Council. Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Zheng Jielian, Liang Yingchen, Du Yanliang and more than 150 internationally-known scholars are serving as distinguished professors, part-time professors and chief scientists at the University. The desert soilization research team of CQJTU and their achievements are the focus of attention by experts and media both at home and abroad.

The institution vigorously promotes collaborative innovation and has made great achievements in scientific research and platform development. Currently, CQJTU has one national engineering technology research center, one national key laboratory, one national-local joint engineering laboratory, thirty-nine provincial/ministerial key laboratories (engineering technology research centers and humanities and social sciences bases) and twelve provincial/ministerial key disciplines (preferably confirm with the graduate school). The University has made world-leading achievements in the fields of bridge defect detection, construction of ports and waterways, inland navigation, andhighway construction in mountainous regions. The University has successively undertaken several national and provincial/ministerial scientific research projects including the National Program for Tackling Key Problems in Science and Technology, “the State 863 Program”, “the State 973 Program”, the National Key Research and Development Project, projects under the National Social Science Foundation and key tackling programs in fields of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, the scientific research grant to the University was over CNY 252 million. In the past decade, the University has won nearly 200 provincial/ministerial awards for the progress in science and technology, including the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology (first, second and third prizes), the State Invention Award, the National Teaching Achievement Award and the China Bridge Award—the Grand Prize for Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award, twelve prizes in total. The University publishes three academic journals. TheApplied Mathematics and Mechanics, edited by Qian Weichang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and sponsored by the University, is an SCI and EI citation journal and is publicly issued to more than 50 countries and regions in the world in both Chinese and English. TheJournal of Chongqing Jiaotong University(Social Sciences Edition) is one of the core Chinese periodicals and key magazines of Chinese technological advancements.

Focusing on teaching, CQJTU has established one national experimental and demonstration center for teaching and developed three national featured specialties, eight national first-class specialties, one national talent cultivation innovation and experimental area, four national high-quality courses, one national bilingual teaching demonstration course, two national quality resources sharing courses and two national online open courses. The University steadily advances the reform on innovation and entrepreneurship education and is among the “first 50 model and experimental universities in innovation and entrepreneurship education reform”. This effort leads to the comprehensive development of students and continues to win extensive recognition from across the country.Students of CQJTU are well known for their high overall quality and practical capability. In the past three years, the University has won nearly fifty top national awards in different levels and categories of disciplinary competitions and has made major breakthroughs in both the level and the quantity of awards.

The University has established friendly, long-term cooperative relationships with more than fifty universities and scientific research institutes from the United States, Russia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Australia and Poland to carry out extensive academic exchange and research cooperation. The Confucius Institute of Benin’s Abomey-Calavi University has cultivated numerous talents in Chinese and enhanced cultural exchange between China and Africa.

Chongqing Jiaotong University is a multidisciplinary university with transportation characteristics and engineering-oriented, jointly established by the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government and the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China. Training Program”, National University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, National University Student Cultural Quality Education Base, Chinese Government Scholarship International Student Receiving Institutions, National Graduate Employment Model Colleges and Universities, National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Model Colleges, are the undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education Excellent school for level assessment, Chongqing’s first-class discipline construction university, a member of the “One Belt and One Road” China-Poland University Alliance, and a core member of the Sino-Russian Jiaotong University Alliance.

In 1951, the Southwest Transportation Technical School was established. In 1960, Chongqing Jiaotong University was established, and the Civil Engineering Department of Chengdu Institute of Technology, the Metallurgy Department of Sichuan Metallurgical Institute, and the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Wuhan Water Transport Institute were successively merged. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Communications to the management of Chongqing Municipality to jointly build colleges and universities for the province and the ministry. In 2006, it was renamed Chongqing Jiaotong University and added as a doctoral institution.

As of March 2021, the school has three campuses: Nan’an, Science City, and Daping, covering an area of more than 3,000 acres, with a school building area of more than 820,000 square meters; there are 19 colleges (departments) and 64 general undergraduate majors; There are more than 30,000 full-time students and more than 2,100 faculty members; there are 4 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 16 first-level discipline master degree authorization points; the library has more than 4.4 million paper and electronic documents (species).
