About Dalian Jiaotong University

Dalian Jiaotong University is the only institution of higher learning in Northeast China characterized by rail transit. In 1956, the school was established to meet the development needs of China’s railway rolling stock industry, and was then Dalian Rolling Stock Manufacturing School. In 1958, it was upgraded to Dalian Railway Institute under the management of the former Ministry of Railways. In February 2000, it was transferred to Liaoning provincial government for management. In May 2004, it was renamed Dalian Jiaotong University.

In the long-term course of running a school, the school has always adhered to the mission of the university, insisted on serving the regional economy and society, the development of the rail transit industry and the national strategic needs, and formed the motto of “Great Iron Spirit” of “being strict, being tough and persistent”, and “Mingde’s pursuit and perseverance”, and trained more than 100,000 graduates, most of whom are employed in the rail transit industry, and some of them have become industry leaders and core technical backbones.

The school has two campuses, Shahekou Campus and Lushunkou Campus, covering a total area of 821,000 square meters, with a total building area of 541,000 square meters. The total value of teaching instruments and equipment is 373 million yuan, and the total collection of literature resources is 1,291,400 copies, 1,451,300 copies of electronic books and more than 27,400 kinds of electronic journals in Chinese and foreign languages.

The school has the right to confer doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, and is a key construction university of first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province. Mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering are the first-class disciplines in Liaoning universities. Mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, and transportation engineering are provincial key disciplines. It is the second batch of universities implementing the excellent engineer education and training plan by the Ministry of Education, the national international training base for software talents (Dalian), the national innovative experimental zone for talent training mode, the national high-level sports team colleges and sports culture research bases, the training base for undergraduate talents in vehicle engineering shortage in Liaoning Province, the training base for service outsourcing talents in Japan in Liaoning Province and the training base for international shipping talents in Northeast Asia in Dalian. In October 2006, he passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education with “excellent” results. There are 12 state-level first-class undergraduate majors, 2 state-level comprehensive reform pilot majors, 5 pilot majors of the Education and Training Program for Outstanding Engineers of the Ministry of Education, and 5 Chinese engineering education certification majors. It has established inter-school cooperative relations with more than 90 colleges and educational research institutions in 23 countries and regions including Australia, the United States, Japan and Russia. Approved by the Ministry of Education, the school established a Sino-foreign cooperatively-run school-Dalian Jiaotong University and Jiaotong University School. There are 3 undergraduate education programs of Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools and Dalian Talent Training Center of Sino-Japanese Friendship.

The school is an advanced unit of summer social practice for college students in China, and has won the Outstanding Organization Award twice in the National Art Exhibition for College Students.
