Established in 1978, the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (GSCASS) is one of the earliest institutions for graduate programs in China, equipped with the most comprehensive setup of disciplines in humanities and social sciences. Authorized to provide a wide range of degree programs, GSCASS offers 16 nationally categorized first-level disciplines of doctoral degree and 17 of master’s, alongside 115 sub-disciplines of doctoral degree, 120 sub-disciplines of master’s degree and 7 sub-disciplines of professional master’s degree.During the last four decades, GSCASS has been committed to inspiring students of distinction who aspire to develop their prominent academic expertise and outstanding research abilities. With the unfailing support of knowledgeable scholars and researchers from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Graduate School has grown into a national stronghold for young social scientists, fostering an influential pool of talents for humanities and social sciences in China. By May of 2020, GSCASS has conferred 5,496 doctoral degrees and 12,107 master degrees on its candidates.
Throughout the past years, GSCASS has continued to prosper. To its greatest pride, GSCASS is home to a family of alumni who have made significant contributions to stimulating Chinese economic growth, deepening theoretical exploration and scientific research, and advancing social development. According to the China Academy of Management Science, GSCASS for many years has ranked first for its comprehensive strength in graduate education in humanities and social sciences in China.
University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences—A New Era of Talent Cultivation in China for Humanities and Social Sciences
At the approval of the Chinese central government, the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (UCASS) was established in May 2017 on the basis of GSCASS, fully leveraging the well-established strength of CASS in research and faculty resources. Now with its undergraduate and graduate programs entering into full operation, UCASS ushers in a new era of further cultivation of young talents in humanities and social sciences preparing students with knowledge and skills necessary in pursuit of academic excellence.
With 39 teaching departments for graduate programs and 11 schools, the University offers 115 majors for doctoral degrees, 120 majors for masters’ degrees, 8 majors for professional master’s degrees, and 34 for bachelor’s degrees, 15 of which currently enroll students. The total number of fulltime registered students is 7039.
UCASS hosts a group of 587 doctoral supervisors and 1,112 master’s degree supervisors recruited from the entire pool of researchers across the Academy. Additionally, 287 renowned professors were invited to take on the roles of undergraduate academic tutors at UCASS, while 106 prestigious scholars and researchers (including 8 CASS Members) are appointed as distinguished professors of the University.
As a university of two campuses, UCASS is headquartered in the district of Liangxiang (Liangxiang Campus), and supplemented by its Wangjing Campus to the northeast of downtown Beijing.
