Communication University of Zhejiang

Communication University of Zhejiang (CUZ) is a high-level media university with distinctive industry characteristics, co-funded by Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government and the National Radio and Television Administration. On September 8, 2004, Xi Jinping, the then Secretary of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, inspected the University and proposed the earnest hope of “keeping up with the times and highlighting the characteristics”. The University was developed from its former schools – Zhejiang Radio and Television College which was founded in 1978, and Zhejiang Radio and Television Specialised College which was founded in 1984. In 2000, the two colleges were merged to form Zhejiang Radio and Television Institute. In 2004, it was upgraded to Zhejiang University of Media and Communications. And recently, the University has gained its new current name. There are two campuses one in Xiasha Hangzhou, and one in Wuzhen Tongxiang, covering an area of 87 hectares with a total construction area of 642,000 square metres. It has 16 secondary colleges, schools and other departments and study and research centres, with more than 14,500 students and 1,400 faculty and staff. It has won the titles of “National Civilized Unit”, “National Education and Training Demonstration Base for Party Members”, “National Language and Written Language Promotion Base”, “National Typical Experience University for Graduates’ Employment” and “National Standardized Language and Written Language Demonstration School”.

The University has the right to grant master’s and bachelor’s degrees, covering six disciplines, including arts, Literature, engineering, education, management, economics, and three provincial first-class disciplines, including Drama and Film, Journalism and Communication, and Information and Communication Engineering. There are 41 undergraduate majors (directions), including 23 art majors. Radio and Television, Digital Media Technology, Radio and Television Editing and Directing, Film and Television Photography and Production, Editing and Publishing, Cultural Industry Management, Broadcast Announcing and Anchoring Art, Animation, and Photography. Network and New Media, Radio and Television Engineering, drama, Film and Television Literature, Drama, Film and Television Art Design, Music Performance, Communication Studies, Network Engineering, Recording art, and Digital Media Art.

The University has two national teaching platforms, 11 provincial teaching platforms, and four provincial teaching teams. It has over 400 production, teaching, and research practice and teaching bases, including one national college student off-campus practice and education base, seven provincial college students’ off-campus practice and education base, and five overseas practice bases. In the past five years, it has successively won 4 provincial teaching achievement awards, undertaken one new Engineering Research and Practice Project of the Ministry of Education, one new Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Project of the Ministry of Education, 42 provincial education and teaching reform projects, 14 provincial curriculum ideological and political teaching projects, and published four national-level planned textbooks and 41 provincial textbooks. There are six national first-class courses and 109 provincial first-class courses.

The University has been supported by all kinds of teaching and research professionals and talents. Currently it has one distinguished “Changjiang scholars” professor, one national “ten-thousand-project” talent, one national lead to plan the list, one “pacesetter project” in the new century national candidate, five national radio and television and the Internet audio-visual industry talents, two talents of the Ministry of Education “in the new century excellent talent”, two talents of the central propaganda department culture famous personnel, two talents of national excellent teachers, four people enjoying the title of the State Council particular allowance experts, provincial colleges and universities, one distinguished professor – “Qianjiang scholars”, one provincial key engineering young talent, two provincial talents leading to plan to list, provincial “151 talents project” training talents, 34 provincial propaganda culture systems at all levels , “a group of five”, and four provincial excellent teachers. The University has eight national science and technology innovation platforms and eight provincial science and technology innovation platforms. In the past five years, it has successively approved more than 100 national scientific research and creation projects, including eight key projects, and presided over more than 300 provincial and ministerial scientific research and creation projects. The total amount of scientific research funds, high-level papers and works, social services, and cooperation have achieved a leap-forward improvement. Excellent achievement has made in gaining prize of Ministry of Education humanities and social sciences, the provincial science and technology progress prize, province philosophy social sciences outstanding achievement award, “five-one project” prize, the Berlin film festival jury, golden rooster, China’s TV series, China international TV festival magnolia award, the red dot design award, the supreme award, and award of new artist of the humanities. Participated in the creation of a large number of influential film and television works, such as “Awakening Time,” “The Glory and Dream,” “Yangtze Map,” “Chicken Rainbow”, “Isolated Hill Road 31”, “Romance Disappearing History”, “Slight Separation”,”Little Joy”, “The Small to the Big Channel”, “Love China”, “For People’s Health”, “Hand in hand, for the people”, “China’s poverty reduction password” and so on, more than 60 items.

The University has conducted exchanges and cooperation with more than 110 universities in the United States, The United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. As a member of the Erasmus Program of the European Union, the University cooperates with Victoria University of Wellington and other universities in New Zealand to hold China-foreign cooperative programs of undergraduate and postgraduate education. It carries out multi-level joint training programs with stony Brook University and other universities in the United States. International cultural exchange school is the Ministry of Education and media training base, the Ministry of Education national and regional research centre in Hong Kong and Macao, and the communication between teachers and students in colleges and universities on the mainland, the Ministry of Education plans to project units, the national foundation studying innovative talents training project of international cooperation unit, and the international exchange association for Chinese education personnel training plan of China and the United States 121 double major Chinese and high-level foreign university project units, the Ministry of Education, The Project Unit of Student Exchange Program, the member unit of Higher Education Partnership Program of Zhejiang Province and Africa, and the Exchange Base of Zhejiang Province to Taiwan.

The employment rate of graduates is over 95% on average. The postgraduate entrance examination rate is rising year by year, and the rate of starting a business one year after graduation is over 5%, which ranks first among all the undergraduate universities in the province. Many graduates have become backbone elites in press and publication, film and television, and cultural industries. Nearly 100 people have won the highest awards in the industry, such as Changjiang Taofen Award and Golden Microphone Award. In 2018, the College of Entrepreneurship won the title of “Zhejiang Provincial Demonstration College of Entrepreneurship,” in 2019, the Media culture creative Industry Park won the title of “Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Business Incubator.” In 2020, the University won the title of “Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation” demonstration base.

The University library has a collection of 1.758 million paper books, 1.643 million electronic books, 1.19 million electronic journals, 8.69 million academic dissertations, and 82,441 hours of audio and video. It equips with the first 5G+4K e-sports comprehensive studio in China, one national experimental teaching demonstration centre, one National Radio and Television Administration Laboratory, one provincial key laboratory, eight provincial experimental teaching demonstration centres, and one provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centre. The total value of teaching equipment is about 375 million yuan.
