About Fudan University
Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded by a Chinese person. The two characters, fù (“return”) and dàn (“dawn”) were borrowed from A Commentary on The Classic of History （《尚书大传·虞夏传》）, of which the part on the Yu and the Xia dynasties mentions: “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning radiance returns at dawn.” In 1917, the institution was renamed
Fudan University, which has been kept ever since.

Fudan University’s graduate education has three “pioneers” in the history of national graduate education. In 1923, Cai Lesheng, a Bachelor of Arts from Jinling University, entered the school of psychology of Fudan University as a graduate student, marking the beginning of Fudan University’s graduate education, which is the first among Chinese colleges and universities. In 1949, when new China was founded, Fudan University took the lead in publicly recruiting postgraduates throughout the country. From October 1949 to December 1965, a total of 651 postgraduates were recruited and trained. In October 1977, Fudan University was the first to resume graduate enrollment in China. After the implementation of the degree regulations on January 1, 1981, Fudan University’s degree and graduate education, like other universities, has really stepped into the development track. Among the 18 first batch of doctoral degree recipients in China in 1983, Fudan accounted for 4, and the first two doctorates of Liberal Arts in China were also trained by Fudan. In 1984, the State Council approved the establishment of graduate schools in 22 universities across the country, including Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University. Among the postgraduates trained by Fudan, 23 were awarded the honorary title of “Chinese masters and doctoral degree winners who have made outstanding contributions” by the state in 1991.
In 2012, Fudan University selected one doctoral dissertation into the national excellent doctoral dissertation, and another 11 doctoral dissertations into the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation nomination papers. So far, Fudan University has won 55 national excellent doctoral dissertations in 14 consecutive national hundred excellent doctoral dissertations from 1999 to 2012, ranking third among national universities, and a total of 70 doctoral dissertations have been nominated for national excellent doctoral dissertations.
