Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is a national “double first-class” construction university, and a Class A construction university in Jiangsu’s high-level university construction peak plan. Born to serve the needs of the national strategy and national economic construction of New China, the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University (the predecessor of the school) was established in 1960 under the former Central (Military Commission) Meteorological Bureau. In 1963, it was independently established as the Nanjing Meteorology Institute. In 1978, it was listed as a national key university. In 2000, it was transferred to the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and renamed as the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in 2004. Since 2007, the school has successively achieved joint construction by multiple parties such as the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, the China Meteorological Administration, the Ministry of Education, and the National Oceanic Administration. Currently, it is a central and local jointly built university mainly managed by Jiangsu Province.
The education of international students in China of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology started in the 1990s, and it is one of the earliest universities with the qualification of recruiting international students approved by the Ministry of Education. As early as 1996, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology obtained the qualification of recruiting international students in China. On September 5, 1998, Vietnamese students Liang Junming and Yang Wenkan came to the school to register. They were the first batch of international students to study at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. As an institution of higher learning that trains senior meteorological talents in China and the world, more than 3000 international students from more than 100 countries have come to Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology for further study.
By actively expanding the enrollment channels for international students in China and widely publicizing the enrollment policies of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, the scale of international students in China has grown by leaps and bounds since the establishment of the College of International Education, and the growth rate has always been at the forefront of the province. At present, there are nearly a thousand international students working on degree studies from over 70 countries around the world studying in over 20 majors, covering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
