About Guangzhou Sport University

Guangzhou Sport University, located in the center of Guangzhou, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, is the only independent sports institution of higher learning in South China. Founded in 1956, the school covers an area of 432 mu, with more than 8,000 students and 550 in-service faculty members. In 2008, he achieved excellent results in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education.

The school began to recruit graduate students in 1979, and became the first batch of authorized units for master’s degree in physical education in Guangdong Province in 1985. In 2000, it won the right to recruit master’s degree in Hong Kong and Macao. In 2006, it was authorized by the first-class discipline of physical education and jointly trained graduate students with the Institute of Physical Education of the State Sports General Administration and individual centers. In 2007, it recruited overseas master’s students. In 2009, it became the project construction unit of newly added authorized units for doctoral degree in Guangdong Province. The school has six major disciplines: pedagogy, literature, economics, management, art and medicine. Eight master’s degrees in physical education and training, sports humanities and sociology, sports human science, sports journalism and communication, sports medicine, etc. are authorized by two disciplines, two master’s degree authorization points, namely, a master’s degree in journalism and communication and a master’s degree in sports. Physical education, dance performance and journalism were rated as key disciplines in Guangdong Province.

The school focuses on undergraduate education and has 18 undergraduate majors, including physical education, sports training, martial arts and national traditional sports, social sports guidance and management, sports human science and journalism. Among them, sports human science, physical education, social sports guidance and management are the major construction sites with national characteristics. Journalism, martial arts, national traditional sports and sports training are the construction points of characteristic majors in Guangdong Province. Sports human science, physical education, and social sports guidance and management are three famous-brand majors in colleges and universities in Guangdong Province. Leisure major is the key major in Guangdong Province. Special education is a characteristic specialty in Guangdong Province. The school has 2 national excellent courses and 1 national excellent resource sharing course, 7 provincial excellent courses, 10 provincial excellent resource sharing courses and 3 provincial excellent video open classes. 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project, 1 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 provincial teaching teams, 10 provincial practical teaching bases for college students, and 4 provincial innovative experimental zones for talent training mode.

At present, there are 415 full-time teachers in the school, including 324 teachers with master’s degree or above, accounting for nearly 80%, and 172 teachers with associate degree or above, accounting for over 40%. At present, there are experts in the discipline review group of the National Social Science Fund Project, members of the Physical Education Steering Committee of National Colleges and Universities, members of the National Fitness Expert Committee of the State Sports General Administration, experts in special allowance of the State Council, national and provincial excellent teachers, winners of the second prize of national scientific and technological progress, distinguished professor, a famous teacher of the “100-person Plan for Excellent Young and Middle-aged Professional and Technical Talents” of the State Sports General Administration, and a Pearl River scholar.

The school has 15 provincial and ministerial-level teaching and training bases, including the National Youth Campus Football Training Base, the National Social Sports Instructor Training Base, the National Aerobics Training Base and the National Youth Sports Club. There are 3 demonstration bases for joint training of postgraduates in Guangdong Province and 114 off-campus practice bases for undergraduates. The school has the first batch of key laboratories of the State Sports General Administration and key research bases of sports and social sciences; It has six key research platforms in Guangdong universities, including the Sports and Health Promotion Laboratory and the Sports Biochemistry Laboratory. The school hosts three comprehensive academic journals of sports science, such as Journal of Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education.

The school has formed a high-level teaching and research team, undertaken a large number of national, provincial and ministerial research projects and commissioned research projects, and won a second prize of national scientific and technological progress, first prizes of several Olympic scientific and technological research and service, advanced scientific and technological Olympic collective, several provincial and ministerial scientific and technological outstanding achievement awards and a large number of scientific invention patents. In 2018, the number of projects established by the school in the National Natural Science Foundation and the number of projects established in the humanities and social sciences program of the Ministry of Education in physical education ranked second in the national physical education colleges. In recent years, the school has formed distinctive advantages in sports dance, aerobics, cheerleading and other competitive events, and has been among the best in international competitions for many times. In 2018-2019, under the initiative of the provincial government, the school led more than 80 universities, middle schools and sports institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sports Education and Development Alliance, and successfully held two Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Student Sports Festivals, making new contributions to building a new pattern of open education and serving Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s national strategy. Schools provide football aid to Xinjiang and volleyball aid to Tibet to promote the cause of national unity.

The school actively strengthens international exchanges and cooperation, and has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 30 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, France and Canada. The school hosted the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games Science Conference, creating a precedent for a university in China to host an international large-scale comprehensive sports science event. The university has established a joint training system for doctoral students with the University of West Michigan in the United States, and cooperated with the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom to carry out a double-degree program of mutual recognition of 2+2 credits. In recent years, a large number of Chinese traditional physical education teachers have been appointed by the state to go abroad for foreign aid, strengthen sports cultural exchanges, spread Chinese excellent traditional culture, and actively serve the national development strategy of “the belt and road initiative”. In the past 63 years since its establishment, the school has adhered to the principle of cultivating people by virtue, and trained more than 40,000 outstanding talents, including more than 60 world champions (7 Olympic champions) and more than 60 senior government managers (more than 30 university presidents). 50% of physical education undergraduates and 70% of physical education postgraduates in Guangdong Province are trained by our school.

Party and state leaders including Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai have received many outstanding students from our school and encouraged them to win glory for our country. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the school has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping’s socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, comprehensively strengthened the construction of grass-roots party organizations, created 9 party building characteristic brands such as Rong Guotuan Pioneer Company, cultivated 14 advanced grass-roots party organizations such as “benchmark departments”, “model branches” and teachers’ “double leaders” studios in national and provincial party building work, and won the title of “Model Party Branch of National College Party Building Work”, “Advanced Collective of Party Building Work in Provincial Education System” and “Demonstration Unit of Party Building in Guangdong University in the New Era”.
