About Liaoning Petrochemical University

As the first petroleum school of New China, Liaoning Petrochemical University (LNPU) was founded in Dalian in 1950, relocated to Fushun in 1953 and renamed Fushun Petroleum Institute in 1958. When transferred to the governance of the Liaoning Provincial Government in February, 2000, the institution changed its name to Liaoning Shihua University with the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in February, 2002. In March, 2010, a partnership agreement was signed between LNPU and Liaoning Provincial Government, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

With the development for the past 69 years, LNPU has evolved into a comprehensive university, specialized in petroleum and petrochemical engineering with eight well-coordinated disciplines which include engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education and art.

LNPU was graded as excellent in the 2007 MOE Undergraduate Teaching Assessment. Designated by the Ministry of Education, the university is now a training base for high-level ethnic talent and a preparatory base for ethnic undergraduates. Meanwhile it is a training base for urgently-needed undergraduate talent in petrochemical industry in Liaoning province.

Up to now, this university has turned out over 120,000 graduates for China’s petroleum and petrochemical industry, most of whom have become backbones in management and technology.

To achieve quality development, LNPU highlights key roles in talent cultivation by upgrading disciplinary structures and teaching resources, which has now greatly improved teaching efficiency and comprehensive strength.

The university covers an area of 1890 mu (126 hectare), and a floor area totaled 532000m2. The campus library houses 2.9343 million paper or electronic books and 42 research databases. Various sports grounds cover 92.700m2. The teaching and research facilities reach 68 million yuan.

The university consists of a college and 16 schools with 52 undergraduate majors. On-campus full-time students total 18,400. It offers 2 joint doctoral programs, 14 first-tier master’s programs, 62 second-tier master programs, and 6 master degree programs including Master of Engineering (covering 10 fields), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc), Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) and Master of Fine Art (MFA). It is also listed as a first-class discipline (Grade A) university in Liaoning province.

In this university, 4 majors are listed as national feature-programs, 6 (1 Master) are selected into the training program of excellent engineers by MOE, 1 pilot program of national comprehensive reform. The university has established 2 national engineering training centers, 3 national experimental teaching centers, 2 national simulated and physical training centers. Besides, the university has two national virtual labs for teaching experiments, and 4 majors certified by CEEAA. We have one provincial feature-program, 2 programs on the provincial comprehensive reform scheme, 7 reform programs of engineering talents, 5 reform programs of entrepreneurship and innovation, and 2 programs specially supported by Liaoning province.

Eleven majors are selected as the first-batch provincial experimental programs for application-oriented transformation and 4 of them are model programs. The university has 8 provincial teaching centers, 6 provincial simulated and physical training centers, 1 provincial training center, 3 provincial engineering training centers, 8 provincial off-campus training centers, and 1 provincial base for innovation and education. The university offers 9 provincial online courses and 2 provincial open courses.

In this university, students are active in innovation and entrepreneurship. In the past three years, the students have won over 830 national awards and 1290 provincial or ministerial awards in academic competitions and technological innovation events. The university is awarded as the KAB entrepreneurship education center and KAB entrepreneurship club for college students by the Communist Youth League Central Committee.

LNPU has a high-level faculty, totaling 1528. Among them, 960 are full-time teachers, 407 with doctor’s degree, 427 with professor or associate professors, and 332 are doctor and master supervisors. The university has employed 1 academic leading master, 2 academicians, 2 Yangtze River scholars and 1 Liaoning Climbing scholar. Currently there are 20 beneficiaries of the State Council Governmental Special Allowance, 4 Liaoning Provincial distinguished professors, 9 hundred-tier talents and 24 thousand-tier talents on the Liaoning Hundred-thousand-myriad Talent Scheme, 14 Leading Teachers in Liaoning province, 6 Outstanding Talents, 26 Outstanding Technicians, 18 Outstanding Young Scholars, and 3 Provincial College Innovation Groups.

Along with efforts to construct a research and technology innovation platform, the university has established one national and local joint engineering laboratory, 26 provincial key laboratories and engineering technology centers, 1 provincial demonstration center for technology transfer. We have also set up a joint petrochemical laboratory with Sinopec (Fushun) Petrochemical Research Institute and Liaoning Branch of China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation, and the Fushun-LSHU Petrochemical Industry Institute. The university has established partnership with over 100 high-tech enterprises for production, education and research.

LNPU actively participates in the construction of the Five Bases in Liaoning Key Economic Belt, Five Regional Development Strategies and Rural Revitalization Strategy. More than 247 professors and doctors have provided technology support for 161 provincial enterprises and institutions, conducted over 300 technical consultations, collected over 500 pieces of technological information, offered over 100 trainings and solved over 200 technical problems, making contributions for economic entities to upgrade. The university carried out in-depth service for rural economic development, strengthening cooperation with enterprises from Zhangwu, Kazuo and other counties. In 2019, a joint project was recognized as a major landmark achievement by the Liaoning Provincial Government Department of Education.

Following the strategy of opening-up education, the university strengthens exchange and cooperation with oversea universities. We have established long-term cooperation with 47 universities and research institutes from over 17 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Finland, Greece and South Korea. A number of joint undergraduate and postgraduate programs include “2 + 2″, ” 1 + 2 + 1″, “2 + 1 + 1” have been carried out with these world-known universities like the University of Edinburgh. The “4 + 1″postgraduate program with University of Edinburgh has been successfully implemented for over 15 years. An undergraduate program in chemical engineering and technology has received approval of the Ministry of Education. Designated by MOE, LNPU is now the recipient institution of oversea students with Chinese government scholarships. There are currently over 1000 oversea students on campus.

LNPU aims to create a shining campus culture. The motto of “persistent in learning and sincere in character-cultivating ” has been handed down for generations of students. The Lei Feng Spirit has penetrated its culture construction and aspects of education, and can be compared to a flame-loyalty to the Party, a brick-devotion to work, a nail-hard work for learning, a drop of water-friendship and cooperation, a leaf-whole-hearted dedication. LNPU has also established its cultural brands including the Lecture Room, College Culture and Art Festival, College Sports and Culture Festival, Community Culture Festival, and organized two state-level sports teams in badminton and fencing.

Liaoning Petrochemical University (LNPU), previous name Liaoning Shihua University (LSHU) is located in Fushun, overlooking the scenic banks of the Hunhe River. It enjoys a beautiful campus environment. LNPU was originally founded in Dalian in 1950 as the first petroleum school of New China. In 1953 the school was relocated to Fushun and in 1958 it was upgraded to Fushun Petroleum Institute. In February 2000 its leadership was transferred to the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, in light of the management system of “simultaneous construction by central and local governments, with the local government playing a more prominent role”. In October of the same year, Fushun Coal Industry School was incorporated into Fushun Petroleum Institute; in February 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Fushun Petroleum Institute was renamed as Liaoning Shihua University. In February 2021, Liaoning Shihua University was renamed as Liaoning Petrochemical University.

For more than 70 years, LNPU has developed into a multidisciplinary university featuring petrochemical engineering with 7 well-coordinated major disciplines. The campus covers more than127 Ha. With 786,000 square meters building area, and 100,000 square meters stadiums. LNPU has the largest library in the northeast of China, which holds 3,000,000 books, and teaching and researching instruments worth 250 million RMB.

Currently, there are over 26,000 students pursuing undergraduateor postgraduate degrees, and 1525 full time staffs (including 427 staffs with PhD degrees, and 11 researchers with state-level scientific program). Now the university has 18 schools and colleges with providing 15 key provincial labs, 3 doctoral programs, 48 master programs, 12 engineering master programs and 51 undergraduate majors. The university is also a base for cultivating urgently-needed college graduates for the petrochemical industry in Liaoning Province.
