“Life is like a dream. Why do you work for it?” Both Taoism and Buddhism regard life as a dream, and believe that life is nothing but an illusion. Only the “Tao” that cultivates all things and is the home of all things, and the “Buddha dharma” that helps all living creatures, are real and eternal. Therefore, Li Bai often gets drunk, and he wants to forget this dream like life in his drunkenness. The poet expressed his criticism of the ugly and dark social reality through drunkenness. At the same time, he found a new world with a new vision and fully enjoyed the fun of life in the haze of drunkenness. When the poet woke up from his drunken dream, he felt that the noisy world had become extremely peaceful: “Jue came to ogle at the court, and a bird sang among the flowers. I ask when the spring wind talked about the warblers.” In the flowers in front of the court, a bird was singing. It was spring. It turns out that there is such a beautiful place in the world where birds are singing and flowers are fragrant and spring is bright. This beautiful scene is not so much the gift of nature as the expression of the poet’s mood. Before he got drunk, he did not see anything, but now he woke up and suddenly found that it was precisely because Li Bai’s mood had calmed down after being drunk that he found a beautiful place in the quiet spring light that he had never found before. This discovery, like a philosophical epiphany, makes people suddenly enter an unprecedented philosophical realm, which is an extraordinary and refined world. All human worries and troubles no longer exist. In this place, we can forget both the bad and the bad, and only appreciate the beauty and the peace of mind.
The poet was very happy about the sudden arrival of the state of enlightenment after being drunk. He felt that he had not had such a state of mind for a long time, so he sighed again and again. He wanted to keep this state of mind for a long time. He was afraid that he would wake up prematurely and return to the cruel real society and be tortured by all kinds of worries. Therefore, he had to drink more. “The wine is also self serving”, drinking until the middle of the moon. He sings to the drunken, carefree, and revels in the carefree world for a long time.
This poem is deeply influenced by Tao Yuanming’s “Drinking” poem, which is a “imitation of Tao”, but it maintains Li Bai’s own style and is written in a “flowing and mellow” way. Not as quiet and indifferent as Tao Yuanming. Only when he is intoxicated, some of Tao Yuanming’s shadow will return to the bold and broad-minded Li Bai once he wakes up completely. ▲
