新裂[1]齐纨素[2]，
鲜洁如霜雪。
裁为合欢扇，
团团[3]似明月。
出入君怀袖，
动摇微风发。
常恐秋节至，
凉飙[4]夺炎热。
弃捐箧笥[5]中，
恩情中道绝[6]。
注释：
[1] 裂：截断，新裂是说刚从织机上扯下来。
[2] 素：生绢。精美柔细的素叫作纨，齐地所产的纨素最著名。
[3] 团团：一作“团圆”。
[4] 凉飙：清凉的急风。
[5] 箧笥：竹箱。
[6] 绝：这里指恩情断绝。
To an Autumn Fan
Lady Ban[1]
Fresh from the weaver’s loom, oh silk so white,
You are as clear as frost, as snow as bright.
Fashioned into a fan, token of love,
You are as round as brilliant moon above.
In my lord’s sleeve when in or out he goes,
You wave and shake, and a gentle breeze blows.
I am afraid when comes the autumn day,
And chilling wind drives summer heat away,
You’ll be discarded to a lonely place,
And with my lord you’ll fall into disgrace.

[1] The favorite of Emperor Cheng, who fell into disgrace like the autumn fan, which has become a symbol of disgrace since then.
