That night, on the main road connecting the two capitals, Sima Gaoche drove one by one from Luoyang Yongwang Palace to Chang’an. On the bus were high-ranking concubines such as He Zhizhang, Zhang Xu, and Gongsun Aunt. They went to Chang’an to meet Li Bai overnight.
Li Bai arrived in Chang’an as expected. At the Tianjing Restaurant, he raised a glass and drank with He Zhizhang, Zhang Xu, Gongsun Aunt, and others.
At night, Chang’an City is ablaze with lights. He Zhizhang excitedly said to Li Bai, “Chang’an has been waiting for you for many years!” Li Bai looked at the starry night of Chang’an and said, “I have been longing for her for many years too!”
At dawn, Emperor Xuanzong was appointed as a temporary governor. The bells and drums of the Xingqing Palace are ringing in unison, and in front of the Qinzheng Building, there are wild geese lined with guards with purple caps and halberds and eunuchs in royal robes. Inside the hall stood various officials, princes, and envoys from various countries.
When Xuanzong looked through this chapter, he saw a fan book with strange handwriting and a violation of the Tang Dynasty custom. There was no copy in Chinese, so he asked Prime Minister Li Linfu to return it. The Prime Minister said in embarrassment, “Under the pen, this gesture is very powerful, it seems to be intentional…”
The Xuanzong ordered the Prime Minister to translate the book, but the Prime Minister gaped and said he didn’t know. Xuanzong asked his uncle Yang Guozhong, who bowed his head and did not speak; Order the ministers to circulate, and the ministers remain silent as if they were cold cicadas. Xuanzong flew into a rage and said, “Didn’t there ever be a vassal who knew a lot of books before the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty drove?”
