这时贺知章走出班序，推荐李白，说他博学多才，非但能识诸国文字，而且堪为王佐。玄宗也听说过李白有大才，忙命高力士速召李白乘飞龙天马入宫。

李白奉召进宫，遥遥看见皇帝和文武百官走出勤政楼前来迎接，就飞身下马，奔上丹墀，伏拜玄宗。

进入殿内，李白掀开番书一看，笑对玄宗说：“这种文字所以不为人识，只是因为他们是个偏僻小国罢了，有何奇哉！”李林甫、杨国忠等都愕然失声。

然后，李白口译番书：“诏谕唐皇！”诸王子和大臣们一听哗然失色。杨国忠急忙奏道：“陛下！想弹丸小邦，怎敢这样狂妄，定是李白欺君！”李白拂袖作色。玄宗却温和地示意李白继续译书。

原来番邦狂妄之极，要勒索唐朝二十郡土地，否则将重兵海陆并进，踏平东洛，血洗长安。诸王子和大臣都十分震怒。玄宗冷笑道：“需要开拓疆土的应是大唐！”

李白却一声冷笑，而后从容奏道：“兵者，凶器也！古人不得已而用之。小邦无知失礼，何用大动干戈。微臣请为陛下草拟一纸敕书，使他们敬服陛下恩德，拱手来降。”
Li Bai gave a sneer and calmly said, “Soldiers, even deadly weapons! The ancients had to use them as a last resort. Xiao Bang was ignorant and disrespectful, so why should he make a big move. Please draw up a written edict for His Majesty, and make them admire His Majesty’s grace and bow their hands to surrender.”
玄宗喜悦地说：“李卿说得有理。朕想请你供奉翰林，在朕的左右掌管密令，如何？” “谢天恩！”玄宗传谕：“上林苑赐宴！”
