About Xi’an Conservatory of Music

Xi ‘an Conservatory of Music is a full-time ordinary institution of higher learning that trains music and art professionals. It is one of the 11 independent music professional institutions in China and the only independent institution of higher learning in Northwest China, and it builds a university for the “domestic first-class discipline” in Shaanxi Province.

In the course of running a school for more than 70 years, the school has worked hard and kept singing, adhering to the school motto of “Mingde Education and Best Music”, and has delivered more than 30,000 high-quality music artists and music educators to the northwest, to the whole country and even to the world. A large number of famous composers, educators, singers and conductors active in music circles at home and abroad, such as Zhao Jiping, Lu Rirong, Qiao Jianzhong, He Hui, Yan Huichang and Lv Jihong, have emerged. It has established a complete higher music education system for Shaanxi and Northwest China, made outstanding contributions to promoting national music art, popularizing world excellent music, and prospering socialist cultural and artistic undertakings, and is known as “the cradle of music talents in Northwest China”, the base for researching and disseminating Shaanxi music culture, and an important town for national film and television music creation.

The school has 580 faculty members and 5331 full-time students. There are 10 teaching units including composition department, humanities college, piano department, orchestral department, national instrumental music department, vocal music department, modern music college, music education college, dance college and Marxism college, and there are also Northwest National Music Research Center, “the belt and road initiative” Higher Institute of Music and Culture, library, art center, art museum, Asset Management Co., Ltd., training and examination center, Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra, etc. There are also symphony orchestra, symphony orchestra, national orchestra, chorus, Xi ‘an Drum Music Art Troupe, Qin Zheng Art Troupe, Youth Art Troupe and other college students’ art practice groups. Northwest National Music Research Center is the key research base of philosophy and social sciences in Shaanxi Province.

At present, the school has two first-level disciplines, namely, art theory and music and dance, and one master’s degree authorization includes music and dance, covering all 71 research directions, all of which are provincial-level dominant disciplines, among which “Chang ‘an Music School Research” under the jurisdiction of “Music and Dance” is a provincial-level characteristic discipline. In the fourth round of national college discipline evaluation, music and dance got B+ grade. There are 12 undergraduate majors, including 3 national first-class majors and 7 provincial first-class majors. There is one national first-class course and 16 provincial first-class courses. The journal Symphony, which was founded in 1982, is a comprehensive music academic journal which is publicly distributed at home and abroad.

There are 392 full-time teachers in the school, including 7 experts who enjoy special allowance from the State Council, and 2 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of Music and Dance Discipline and Art Theory Discipline of the Ministry of Education. Shaanxi Province has 5 outstanding experts, 5 “35 talents” and 10 provincial famous teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 201 professional and technical titles with associate degree and above, and 336 with doctoral and master’s degrees.

The school has won the second prize of national scientific and technological progress and the first prize of provincial scientific and technological progress; Gold medal in Verdi International Vocal Music Competition; Italian Viola Competition Grand Prize; The first prize of the international oboe instrument association competition; China Music Golden Bell Award Bel Canto Gold Award and Chorus Gold Award; China Wenhua Award; Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award; China Music Gold Record Award; Gold medal in piano group of CCTV piano violin competition, gold medal in bel canto singing in TV singer grand prix, silver medal in chorus, bronze medal in TV dance grand prix; The first and second prizes of the combination performance of Chinese national instrumental music and folk music by the Ministry of Culture. The school has been rated as “Advanced Urban Grass-roots Party Organization”, “Advanced Unit of Democratic Management”, “Advanced Unit of Key Discipline Construction”, “Model School of Managing Schools by Law” and “Provincial Civilized Campus” in Shaanxi Province.

Relying on discipline characteristics and location advantages, adhering to the four major music cultures of “Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang Dynasties, Northern Shaanxi Red, Northwest Region and Qin School Style”, the school has established friendly and cooperative relations with more than 30 universities, scientific research institutions and academic groups in more than 20 countries and regions, based in Shaanxi, facing the northwest, serving the whole country and going to the world. A discipline and specialty system has been established, which is guided by the theories of music, dance and art, and promotes the balanced development of traditional and emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary specialties in a coordinated manner. The school-running orientation of a high-level and distinctive music college has been defined, with the mission of serving the regional economic and social development through practical teaching and scientific research.

The school focuses on the national strategy and the main battlefield of Shaanxi cultural undertaking construction, and has achieved remarkable results in serving the society and radiating university culture. With the approval of the provincial government, the “the belt and road initiative” Institute of Music and Culture was established. Helping Ningqiang, Zhenba and Xunyi to get rid of poverty has yielded fruitful results. Every year, tens of thousands of people take part in social amateur music training, which greatly promotes the healthy development of aesthetic education and social music education. Taking inheriting red genes and boosting cultural self-confidence as our duty, ideological and political education runs through the whole process of personnel training, creating an education brand of “Ideological and Political Education+Art”, integrating art professional education with ideological and political education in depth, and playing a leading role in social moral education construction.
