About Xi`an International Studies University

In 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government, the Russian Department of the College of Literature of Lanzhou University, the Russian Section of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwestern University and the Russian Specialization Section of Northwestern University were merged to form the predecessor of Xi’an International Studies University. -In 1952, the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China was merged into the Northwest Russian College, and it began to train foreign language talents for the country at the undergraduate level.

It was renamed Xi’an Institute of Foreign Languages in 1958 and Xi’an International Studies University in 2006, and started to admit postgraduates in 1979, and became a master’s degree granting institution in 1986, a doctoral degree granting institution in 2013, and a postdoctoral research station in 2014. In 2011, Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government listed the university as a high-level university to be built during the “12th Five-Year Plan”. After 70 years of construction and development, the university has formed a multidisciplinary pattern highlighting the characteristics of foreign language education and humanities and social sciences research, and the coordinated development of seven disciplines, including literature, education, economics, management, law, science and art, etc. It is an important base for training foreign language talents in western China, and plays an irreplaceable role in the field of foreign language education, teaching and research in northwest China.

The university covers a total area of 1,593 mu and has a building area of 1,048,000 square meters. The university vigorously promotes the construction of smart campus, gradually builds digital campus and other service platforms, has smart classrooms, multilingual translation experimental teaching center, collaborative innovation laboratory and other modern laboratories, and the whole university classrooms are equipped with 100% multimedia facilities. The library collection covers 50 languages, with 1,527 Chinese and foreign language newspapers and journals and 44 databases. The university has been awarded the honorary titles of “Safe Campus” and “Civilized Unit Pioneer” in Shaanxi Province.

The university has 20 colleges (departments) and other teaching institutions, and has a first-degree authorization point for foreign languages and literature, 16 second-degree doctoral points and a post-doctoral research station, and joint training of doctoral students with 8 foreign universities. There are 9 master’s degree authorization points in foreign language and literature, Marxist theory, education, Chinese language and literature, applied economics, political science, journalism and communication, geography and business administration, 47 second-level degree authorization points, and 9 professional degree authorization points in translation, Chinese international education, tourism management, accounting, journalism and communication, education, finance, international business and art. The university offers 60 undergraduate majors, 20 of which are in non-common languages of countries along the “Belt and Road”. English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Translation, Business English, Tourism Management, Arabic, Hindi, Business Administration, Korean, Urdu, Portuguese, Italian, Kazakh, Accounting, Finance, Journalism and other majors are national first-class undergraduate majors construction points, and there are 20 national first-class undergraduate majors construction points and 9 provincial first-class undergraduate majors construction points. The coverage rate of all undergraduate majors in recruitment has reached 50%. English and French majors are national comprehensive reform pilots, and five majors, including English, Russian, French, tourism management and translation, are national specialties. The university vigorously carries out the cultivation of outstanding talents with “dual foreign languages + majors”, and has set up 9 experimental classes for outstanding talents in diplomacy, international trade, journalism and communication, business administration, economics, international tourism, Chinese translation and foreign language (English, Russian and German) and one experimental class for outstanding talents in English. The university co-sponsored with Sichuan Foreign Language University, 31 western universities and 7 units such as Foreign Studies Society and Foreign Education Society jointly formed the Western Higher Education Teaching Alliance for Foreign Language Education. The university is a qualified institution for recommending excellent undergraduates to take master’s degree without examination, enrolling in early batches of non-competitive languages and accepting guaranteed students. The university has strong scientific research capabilities, with the Center for Polish Studies and the Center for Northeast Asian Studies being recognized as the record center for country and regional studies by the Ministry of Education. The Center for European and American Literature, the Research Center for Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and the Research Center for the Translation and Communication of Shaanxi Culture to Foreign Countries are the key research bases of philosophy and social sciences in Shaanxi (universities). “The Innovation Team of Education Development Strategy Research for Countries along the Belt and Road is a youth innovation team of Shaanxi universities.
