About Yunnan Minzu University

Yunnan Minzu University is a comprehensive university that trains senior professionals of all ethnic groups. It is a provincial key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government. Founded on August 1st, 1951, formerly known as Yunnan University for Nationalities, it is one of the earliest universities for nationalities in the People’s Republic of China. It was renamed Yunnan University for Nationalities in April, 2003, and it has gone through 70 years.Since its establishment, the school has always been highly valued and cared by the leaders of the Party and the state. Party and state leaders Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping met with representatives of teachers and students of our school; Zhou Enlai, Peng Dehuai, Chen Yi, panchenerdinichokyigyaltsen panchenerdiniqoigyigya, Li Lanqing, Li Tieying, Sima Yi Ahmad and others visited the school in person, concerned about the growth and progress of teachers and students of all ethnic groups and the construction and development of the school. The first vice president and vice president of the school are Zhou Baozhong, vice president of Yunnan Provincial People’s Government, and Zhang Chong, two generals. Since the establishment of the school, a group of academic celebrities, such as famous ethnographer, historian and educationist Professor Ma Yao, famous ethnographer and archaeologist Professor Wang Ningsheng, famous historian and ethnographer Professor He Yaohua, famous ethnographer, anthropologist and professor Shao Ying, and famous historian Professor Xie Benshu, have become the founders and backbone of the school’s teaching, research and discipline construction and development.

At present, there are 33,344 students in the University, including 26,237 undergraduates, 3,009 postgraduates, 92 doctoral students, 588 international students, 3,231 minority college preparatory students in the province and 187 junior college students in Shangri-La school. Another 18,967 students are continuing education. There are 1712 faculty members, with 212 senior titles, 384 deputy senior titles, 558 intermediate titles, 558 junior titles and below, 408 doctoral degrees and 908 master’s degrees. At present, the school has 1 national leading social science talent, 1 national-level talent in the new century, 1 Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China cultural master and “Four Groups” talent, 5 people who enjoy special allowance from the State Council, 1 national outstanding teacher, 1 national model teacher, 1 “cross-century outstanding talent” from the Ministry of Education and 5 chief experts of major projects of the National Social Science Fund. 55 people (including 2 Yunling scholars, 8 teaching masters, 5 cultural masters, 39 top-notch young talents and 1 industrial technology leader) were selected in Yunnan Province’s high-level talent training support plan, 14 people (including 13 young talents and 1 industrial talent) were selected in Yunnan Province’s high-level talent introduction plan, 11 people were entitled to special subsidies from the provincial government, 8 provincial-level teaching masters and 14 young and middle-aged academic technology leaders in Yunnan Province. There are 13 young and middle-aged academic and technological leaders’ reserve talents and innovative talents in Yunnan Province, 1 “Four Groups” talent in Yunnan Province, 1 high-tech talent introduced from Yunnan Province and 2 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education.

The University covers an area of 2,550 mu with a building area of 970,000 square meters. There are more than ten national and provincial research institutions and talent training bases, and a national museum with nearly 20,000 cultural relics. The library has more than 2.4 million copies of all kinds of paper books and nearly 1.3 million copies of electronic books. Journal of Yunnan University for Nationalities (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) is included in General Contents of Chinese Core Journals, 2020 edition (i.e. 9th edition) as the core journal of comprehensive humanities and social sciences, which is the source journal of Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI), the core journal of comprehensive evaluation of Chinese humanities and social sciences AMI, the core journal of Chinese science and technology, and the “Excellent Journal” of the first Yunnan Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television Awards. Journal of Yunnan University for Nationalities (Natural Science Edition) has been continuously selected as the source journal of China Science and Technology Papers Statistical Source Journal (China Science and Technology Core Journal) since 2012, and has been rated as an excellent science and technology journal of Chinese universities and a characteristic science and technology journal of Chinese universities.

The University pays attention to foreign cooperation and exchange, which is an important window for the country and Yunnan to open to the outside world. Since its establishment, more than 100,000 heads of state, politicians, experts, scholars and international friends from more than 80 countries and regions, including Queen Elizabeth II, former US Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger, Norwegian King harald v and Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh, have visited Yunnan University for Nationalities and given good comments. In 1981, the school began to recruit foreign students and foreign postgraduates in 1992. It was one of the first universities in Yunnan Province to recruit foreign students and teach Chinese as a foreign language. It has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 80 universities or academic institutions in more than 20 countries including the United States, Norway, Japan and South Korea. In recent years, the school has actively integrated into the national “the belt and road initiative” construction, served Yunnan’s leap-forward development, closely focused on the school-running goal of “based on Yunnan, serving the border areas and radiating Southeast Asia and South Asia”, laid a good job in opening up the “three cards” of education with South Asia Southeast Asia Language and Culture Institute, Lanmei International Vocational College and China-India Yoga Institute as the main body, promoted language communication, cultural communication and heart communication with South Asia and Southeast Asia countries, and served as an important bridge for Community of Shared Future for Mankind. At the same time, the school pays attention to domestic cooperation, and has signed strategic cooperation agreements with the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Institute of Religious Studies, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yunnan Baiyao Group, Lijiang, Dehong, Shangri-La, Xishuangbanna and other research institutes, universities and cities to carry out substantive research work.
