夜行黄沙[1]道中
辛弃疾
明月别枝[2]惊鹊，
清风半夜鸣蝉。
稻花香里说丰年，
听取[3]蛙声一片。
七八个星天外，
两三点雨山前。
旧时茅店[4]社林[5]边，
路转溪桥忽见。

[1]黄沙：江西上饶有黄沙岭，在上饶县西四十里的乾元乡，高曰十五丈。辛弃疾曾在这里建有书堂。
[2]别枝：离开枝头。
[3]听取：听到。
[4]茅店：酒店；客店。
[5]社林：指土地庙附近的树林。社，祭祀土地神的场所。

Startled by magpies leaving the branch in moonlight,
I hear cicadas shrill in the breeze at midnight.
The dcefields’ sweet smell promises a bumper year;
Listen, how frogs’ croaks please the ear!
Beyond the clouds seven or eight stars twinkle;
Before the hills two or three raindrops sprinkle.
There is an inn beside the village temple. Look!
The winding path leads to the hut beside the brook.

“The Moon over the West River · Huangsha Doad nt Night” is a lyric by Xin Qiji, a Song Dynasty lyricist. The lyric was written when the author was relegated to live in Jiangxi Province. The lyric focuses on the night scene of Huangsha Ridge: the bright moon and clear wind, the sparse stars and rain, the chirping of magpies and cicadas, the fragrance of rice flowers and the sound of frogs. The lyrics focus on the characteristics of the night walk, showing the beautiful scenery of the countryside in the summer night and the author’s heartfelt joy of the harvest year. The whole lyric is about the idyllic scenery of the mountain village in the summer night from three aspects: visual, auditory and olfactory.
