About Beijing Normal University

Beijing Normal University (BNU) is a key university directly under the Administration of the Ministry of Education. The predecessor of the university was the Peking Normal University Normal School, which was founded in 1902. In 1908, it was renamed the Excellent Normal School of The Beijing Normal University. In 1912, it was renamed Beijing Higher Normal School. 1923 It was renamed Beijing Normal University, the first normal university in Chinese history. 1931 and 1952 Beiping Women’s Normal University and Furen University were merged into Beijing Normal University.

For more than 100 years, Beijing Normal University has been sharing a common destiny with the Chinese nation’s progressive cause of independence, freedom, democracy and prosperity, and has played an important role in the May 4th and December 9th patriotic movements. During the “7th five-year Plan” and “8th Five-year Plan” period, Beijing Normal University was selected as one of the first ten universities of national key construction. During the ninth Five-year Plan period, it was included in the “211 Project” construction plan in the first batch. In 2002, on the occasion of the centenary of the university, the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Government decided to focus on the joint construction of Beijing Normal University. At the ninth Congress of the Communist Party of Beijing, Beijing Normal University was listed as one of the world-class universities supported by the construction. During the tenth Five-year Plan period, the university entered the national “985 Project” construction plan. In 2017, THE university was listed in class A of the National “World-class University” construction, and 11 disciplines were listed in the National “World-class University” construction.

Beijing Normal University consists of two campuses (including four campuses) : Beijing Campus and Zhuhai Campus. Beijing Campus has more than 24,000 full-time students, while Zhuhai Campus was officially approved by the Ministry of Education in April 2019, with more than 3600 postgraduate students. The university consists of 3 academic departments, 27 colleges, 2 departments, 11 research institutes and 4 academies. It has a collection of 4.9 million books and 9.7 million e-books.

In 2002, It became one of the first six universities with the right of independent examination and approval of undergraduate majors. In 2018, it became one of the first 20 universities that can carry out independent examination and approval of degree authorization.
