Song of the Harp

Cao Zhi[1]

Good wine is served in palace high;

Friends are invited from far and nigh.

Cooks have prepared a sumptuous feast;

They’ve killed fat sheep, cattle and beast.

The western lutes play lofty strains;

The eastern, harmonious refrains.

Ladies like swallows dance along;

Fair songstresses sing their best song.

After passing three rounds of wine,

We loosen our belts for dish fine.

The host offers pieces of gold;

The guests wish him to live till old,

Not to forget friendship lasts long,

And injustice can’t but be wrong.

Modesty’s what good men adore.

What do we, bowing, need for more?

Surprised the wind blows off the sun,

Westward we see the day has done.

Could we see splendid times again?

A hundred years will pass amain.

Today we live in capital,

Which would soon turn to ruined hall.

There were no ancient sages but died;

Knowing our destiny, we sighed.
