饮马长城窟，水寒伤马骨。
往谓长城吏，慎莫[2]稽留[3]太原[4]卒。
官作[5]自有程[6]，举筑[7]谐汝声[8]！
男儿宁当格斗死，何能怫郁筑长城。
长城何连连，连连三千里。
边城多健少，内舍多寡妇。
作书与内舍，便嫁莫留住。
善事[9]新姑嫜[10]，时时念我故夫子[11]！
报书往边地，君今出言一何鄙[12]？
身在祸难中，何为稽留他家子？
生男慎莫举[13]，生女哺用脯[14]。
君独不见长城下，死人骸骨[15]相撑拄！
结发行事君[16]，慊慊[17]心意关。
明知边地苦，贱妾何能久自全？

[3] 稽留：滞留，指延长服役期限。
[4] 太原：秦郡名，在今山西中部一带。
[5] 官作：官府的工程。
[6] 程：期限。
[7] 筑：筑土用的杵。
[8] 谐汝声：把你的声音同劳动节拍弄和谐，指齐声唱起夯歌。
[9] 事：侍奉。
[10] 姑嫜：公婆。
[11] 故夫子：士卒自称。
[12] 鄙：浅陋。
[13] 举：抚养。
[14] 哺：喂养。脯：干肉。
[15] 骸骨：尸骨。
[16] 行事君：侍奉您，指出嫁。
[17] 慊慊：十分牵挂。
I Water My Steed

I water steed at the foot of Great Wall;
The water in the cave is piercing cold.
I go to see the man in charge of all:
“Do not keep us from home till we grow old!”
“The public works have their table of time.
Go and swing your hammer and sing in chime!”
“A man would rather die in battlefield
Than toil at the Wall with hammer to wield.”
The Wall is serpentine and long;
It stretches out three thousand miles.
How many men on border are strong!
Their wives at home stay without smiles.
I send a letter to my wife:
“Remarry and lead a new life!
Serve well your mother-in-law new,
But do not keep your former husband out of view!”
Her letter in reply comes to the border:
“How can your mind be in such a disorder?
Now that you are in woe,
Could I leave you and elsewhere go?”
“If sons are born, put them aside!
If daughters, feed them with meat dried!
Do you not see by the Great Wall
Sons become a heap of bones one and all?”
“I’ve served you since I bound up my hair,
And constant for you is my care.
I know your grief in borderland.
But if alone, can I long stand?”
