HARBIN, July 6 — China’s National Atomic Energy Agency (NAEA) will sponsor 100 international students from developing countries to study for master’s or doctoral degrees in nuclear science and technology in China every year starting from this year, a reporter learned from the International Symposium on Cooperation in Nuclear Energy Science and Education on July 6.

On the same day, the “International Seminar on Cooperation in Nuclear Energy Science and Education” was held in Harbin under the guidance of the China National Atomic Energy Agency (CNAA) and co-hosted by the China Nuclear Industry Education Society and Harbin Engineering University. “The seminar was held in Harbin. Students and teachers from 17 countries, including Nigeria and Pakistan, participated in the conference online and offline.
In 2008, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Chinese government jointly established the Nuclear Education and Training Centre at Harbin Engineering University, with the participation of several key Chinese universities. In 2017, the Chinese National Atomic Energy Agency, together with the Chinese Ministry of Education, created the Chinese Government Atomic Energy Scholarship to sponsor 40 international students from developing countries to study for a master’s or doctoral degree in nuclear science and technology in China each year. The first phase of the scholarship programme lasts for five years and has supported 188 international students.

“As the first phase of the Chinese government atomic energy scholarship training unit, the university has successfully completed the studies of about 50 international students, which has strongly supported the development of talents and technologies in emerging nuclear power countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ route.” Tan Sichao, Dean of the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at Harbin Engineering University, said.

It is reported that starting this year, China’s National Atomic Energy Agency will launch the second phase of the project, which will sponsor 100 international students from developing countries to study for a master’s or doctoral degree in nuclear science and technology in China every year, and will be undertaken by Harbin Engineering University and 12 other universities. The second phase of the programme will strengthen the cultivation of high-level talents in the nuclear field, and students from various countries will apply for the scholarship to further their studies in Chinese universities and research institutions, so as to jointly promote the progress of nuclear energy science and technology and make new contributions to energy transformation and sustainable development.
