Guangzhou is a sprawling port city northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River. The city features avant-garde architecture such as Zaha Hadid’s Guangzhou Opera House (known as the “double pebble”); the carved box-shaped Guangdong Museum; and the iconic Canton TV Tower skyscraper, resembling a thin hourglass. About Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

Located in Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city and the economic center in South China, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is a prestigious university with distinctive international characteristics. It is an important base in South China for international talent cultivation, foreign languages and cultures, international trade and international strategic studies. It boasts 20,126 undergraduate students, 4,716 postgraduate and doctoral students, and over 10,000 continuing education and overseas students.

The University attaches great importance to all-round international cooperation and exchange in education. It maintains such ties with 483 universities and institutions in 60 countries/regions. The University has jointly established six Confucius Institutes in Japan, Russia, Peru, Cape Verde, Egypt and Portugal respectively, and one Confucius Classroom in Australia. Accredited by the Ministry of Education, GDUFS’s well-established cooperative programs of MA TESOL with the University of Leeds and MA English Language Education with the University of Reading have been highly recognized by the students and public. The University has been a major actor in the trilateral CAMPUS Asia program and an active participant in educational cooperation both across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and among the countries along the “Belt and Road”. It has also launched a host of educational initiatives, including Campus GBA, Campus Eurasia, International Governance Innovation Graduate Program supported by the MOE, Talent Training Programs for RCEP and OECD, both funded by the MOE’s China Scholarship Council, the GBA joint graduate program, the GBA Portuguese Language Education Alliance, and the Confucius Institute Hosting Universities Alliance in GBA.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is a major internationalized university in South China for its global-minded faculty/students and its research on international languages, literature, culture, trade and strategic studies.

Dating back to 1965 when the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages was established and 1980 when the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade was founded, the University had its present form by merging the two in 1995, with the Guangdong College of Finance and Economics incorporated into the University in 2008. The University has three campuses with a total area of 153 hectares: the North Campus at the foot of the Baiyun Mountain, the South Campus in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, and Dalang Campus.

With a teaching staff of 1,154, among whom 52% are full or associate professors and 215 are international teachers, the University has 22 faculties offering 64 programs in literature, economics, management, law, engineering, science, education and art for bachelor, master and doctoral degrees and post-doctoral research. With 20 foreign languages available, the University is the only one in South China that offers the greatest variety of foreign language programs and its foreign language and literature as academic discipline is among the best across the nation.

The University serves over 20,000 full-time undergraduate students, nearly 3,000 graduate students and over 12,000 international and continuing-education students. It is one of the 19 universities worldwide qualified to provide high-end translation professionals to the United Nations and the only foreign studies-oriented university in the CAMPUS Asia program. GDUFS is home to one national key research center for humanities and social sciences, 4 provincial-level key research centers and Guangdong Research Institute on International Strategies, a think-tank for the government of Guangdong Province. The University publishes four academic journals of national impact: Modern Foreign Languages, International Economics & Trade Research, Journal of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Journal of Strategy & Decision-Making.

GDUFS is active in a full range of international cooperation and exchanges in education. To date, it has ties with 268 universities and academic/cultural institutions in 38 countries or regions. The University has co-established three Confucius Institutes overseas in Japan, Russia and Peru.
