Lanzhou City University is a provincial full-time undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education in February 2006. The university is located in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, and has 15,400 full-time students.

Its predecessor was Lanzhou Normal College, which was founded in June 1958, and Baily Petroleum School, which was founded in May 1942 by rewi Alley, a New Zealand friend. In August 2007, approved by the Gansu Provincial government, Gansu Preschool Normal School integrated into the school.
