Brief Introduction
Mount Yuelu gets its name from the “South Mountain Records 南岳记”, which states that there are eight hundred miles around the South Mountain 南岳, headed by Huiyan, and the foot is Yuelu “. Yuelu Mountain is located on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River 湘江, Yuelu District, Changsha City 长沙, Hunan Province 湖南; Juzizhou is located in the middle of the Xiangjiang River, from south to north, running through the river center, looking west at the foot of the mountain, and facing the ancient city in the east.
There are 977 species of plants belonging to 559 genera and 174 families in the Mount Yuelu Scenic Area, with a large number of rare and endangered species and ancient and famous trees with a long history. Mount Yuelu is a famous cultural mountain integrating Confucianism 儒家, Buddhism 佛教, and Taoism 道教 with the essence of Chinese culture.
In 2001, Juzizhou Scenic Area was officially rated as National AAAA Scenic Area. In 2002, Lushan Scenic Area was officially rated as National AAAA Scenic Area. In January 2012, Mount Yuelu Scenic Area was successfully upgraded to National AAAAA Scenic Area.

Mount Yuelu Scenic Area covers an area of 35.20 square kilometers, including eight scenic spots, including Lushan Mountain Scenic Area 麓山景区, Tianma Mountain Scenic Area 天马山景区, Juzizhou Scenic Area 橘子洲景区, Taohua Mountain Scenic Area 桃花山景区, Shijia Mountain Scenic Area石佳岭景区石佳岭景区, Zhaiziling Mountain Scenic Area 寨子岭景区, Houhu Lake Scenic Area 后湖景区, and Xianjia Lake Scenic Area 咸嘉湖景区. The planned area of the peripheral protection area outside the scenic area is 22.68 square kilometers. The Lushan Scenic Area and Juzizhou Scenic Area have been completed, and the landscape construction of the Tianma Mountain Scenic Area has been basically completed.
The overall developed land area of Juzizhou Scenic Area is 91.64 hectares, with a total investment of about 1.4 billion yuan. The annual tourist capacity is reasonably estimated to be 2.0946 million person-times per year. The development and construction structure of the whole Orange Island Scenic Area is planned as “one axis and four zones”. The first axis is the tourism axis running through the north and south, and the fourth zone is the core scenic area, tourism-supporting service area, beach park, and water sports area. Among them, the core scenic spot of Juzizhou is the most important part of the four districts.
Lushan Scenic Area is one of the core scenic spots of Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area, with an area of 5.28 square kilometers, located on the west bank of Xiangjiang River, and is a rare urban mountain scenic area. There are 15 cultural relics under key protection at or above the provincial level.
Founded in the 57th year of Qianlong’s 乾隆 reign in the Qing Dynasty 清朝, Aiwan Pavilion 爱晚亭 was founded by Luo Dian 罗典, the dean of Yuelu Academy. It is one of the four famous pavilions. The Aiwan Pavilion was formerly known as the Red Leaf Pavilion, also known as the Aifeng Pavilion. Later, Du Mei’s poem was renamed Aiwan Pavilion. The Aiwan Pavilion has gone through many vicissitudes of life and has been repaired successively in Tongzhi, Guangxu, and Xuantong years of the Qing Dynasty.
Xiaoxiang Celebrity Club 潇湘名人会所 is located in the Peach Garden to the north of the Plum Garden. It is renovated on the basis of the original Tang Shengzhi Residence. With a total floor area of 1435.1 square meters and an area of 1092 square meters, it is a club that integrates academics, exchange, tourism, and sightseeing, and receives friends and literati from all sides.
Cultural Events
Yuelu Mountain is a famous cultural mountain integrating Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism with the essence of Chinese culture. It contains the cultural connotation of Yuelu Mountain jointly developed by great scholars, eminent monks, Taoists, and poets in history. Yuelu Academy 岳麓书院, a millennium academy, is the only one among the four ancient academies in China that have continued to run schools and research. Its profound and rich cultural traditions will also be inherited in modern scenic tourism activities.
Gu Lushan Temple 古麓山寺, known as “the first scenic spot in Han and Wei Dynasties and the first Taoist temple in Hunan”, is not only the first Buddhist temple in Hunan but also the seat of the Hunan Buddhist Association and Hunan Buddhist Academy.
