About Shanghai Dian Ji University

The motto of Shanghai Dianji University (SDJU) is ‘illustrious virtue, highest excellence; extensive study, and earnest practice’, four essential phrases selected from two Chinese Classics ‘The Great Learning’ and ‘The Doctrine of the Mean’. Our mission in education is to create top talents in technology and its application that will best serve the city of Shanghai and the world in the new era.

The university is a modern public university under the supervision of Shanghai Education Commission. Be strong in applied sciences as it may, SDJU is organized into ten Schools (electrical engineering; mechanical engineering; electronic and information engineering; business; foreign languages; materials science; art and design; Marxism; literature and science; and physical education), three Colleges (for product intelligence, continuing education, and advanced vocational technology, respectively), and one independent Institute (collaborative with Shanghai Electric). It has more than 1100 faculty members, some 12,900 full-time postgraduate, undergraduate and postsecondary students, and more than 1,800 adult education students.

As its founding in the 1950s, SDJU was an educational innovation, a community of hands-on problem solvers in love with practice-oriented theories and eager to contribute to efficient manipulation and manufacturing in the motor (‘Dianji’ in Chinese) industry. Today that spirit still guides how we educate students on campus and how we collaborate with local government, enterprises and research institutes to make SDJU teaching beneficial to them.

SDJU’s spirit of application-oriented exploration has fuelled a number of technological advances. A major breakthrough in 2018 was the creation of a giant crankshaft employed in the low-speed diesel engine for driving a marine vessel. This particular variety of crankshaft was shaped, machined and heat-treated in a completely new process supported by our industry partner, which in effect greatly reduces the cost and may hence prove to be a core competence especially for a profitable domestic market.

Current research and education areas include smart wind power, optimal design and special motors, and intelligent drive & control and modern electrical equipment; intelligent digital manufacturing, large-scale intelligent manufacturing equipment, and robotic systems; manufacturing processes and heavy & complex forgings, material organization and performance control, and new materials and applications; equipment software and Big Data analysis, smart wireless applications, and vision technologies; optimization and quality improvement, product/service systems, and logistics planning and management; value chain finance, equipment manufacturing industry, organizational behaviour, and innovation and internationalization.

SDJU’s impact also includes our global engagement. SDJU has worked with more than 60 higher-education organizations and institutions across the globe to push the limits of cultural exchange and knowledge sharing. One way we make a difference on the international stage is by starting overseas innovation centres that attract investment and high-end talent. Among other global involvement, these overseas centres provide an opportunity for an outburst of international programs or projects for the SDJU community and beyond.

The university incorporates the “internationalization strategy” into the university’s “13th Five-Year” development plan, and vigorously promotes international cooperation and exchanges. The domestic and foreign influence, the level and ability of internationalization of running universitys have been greatly improved, and new impetus has been injected into the development of the university.

1. New partners for international cooperation continue to expand.

The university has successively signed (renewed) various cooperation agreements with nearly 40 universities outside the country (border) such as Purdue University in the United States and the University of Applied Sciences Bremen in Germany, a total of 49 cooperation agreements. The university has closely cooperated with foreign industry companies and established overseas centers in San Francisco, USA and Stockholm, Sweden. It has achieved positive results in the introduction of high-end talents, technological innovation and cooperation, and cultural exchanges.

2. The internationalization level of teachers has been continuously improved.

The university plays the role of overseas famous teacher project platform, hires outstanding foreign teachers to teach in the university, and encourages teachers to jointly carry out international cooperative teaching and scientific research activities. In the first five years, a total of 13 long-term overseas famous teachers and 136 short-term overseas famous teachers were hired, and nearly 800 international courses were opened for students; 167 teachers were selected to go overseas for training, research and visits, and the internationalization of teacher team building and talent training The process is further accelerated.

3. The training of international talents for local students continues to show results.

The Sino-foreign cooperative education program for undergraduate majors in International Economics and Trade, jointly organized with the University of Northern Iowa in the United States, has been running for 10 years, and the influence of students, parents and employers is relatively good. The Kaiserslautern Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing was jointly established with the Kaserslautern University of Applied Sciences in Germany to carry out joint training of talents and officially launched the application for Sino-German cooperative education institutions. The professional certification of university engineering education is moving towards the international equivalent engineering education standards, and provides a “passport” with internationally recognized quality standards for the excellent “field engineers” cultivated by the university to go to the world, “Electrical Engineering and Automation” And “Material Forming and Control Engineering” has successfully passed the professional certification of engineering education. In the past five years, 1,336 students have gone to study abroad (overseas), and received 22 batches of overseas friendly college student exchange groups totaling more than 300 people, which effectively broadened the international vision of teachers and students and enhanced their cross-cultural communication capabilities.

4. The work of “improving quality and efficiency” for international students has continuously achieved new results.

All majors of the university can recruit international students. There are also four undergraduate majors in English, automation, software engineering, international economics and trade, and marketing. As of 2020, the total number of registered international undergraduates is 238, of which 215 are undergraduates (in China 116), 23 general students, distributed in our university of business, electronic information, electrical, mechanical, and higher vocational colleges. In addition to the traditional source of students from African and Asian countries, international students from the Belt and Road countries and some exchange students from Europe, such as Vietnam, Turkmenistan, Russia, and France, have been added. The student source structure has been further optimized.
