In the Shanglin Garden, the disciples of the pear garden tapped on the jade board and played the sheng pipes in unison. The palace maids were like butterflies wearing flowers, passing cups and exchanging candles at the banquet. Li Bai talked confidently and drank wildly and laughed wildly in front of the Xuanzong and the princes. Yongwanglin specially came over to toast Li Bai and praised him highly.
依势持宠的宦官高力士和傲慢的杨国忠哪把李白放在眼里。杨国忠嘲笑说：“这样的才子只配给我磨墨！”高力士狂妄地说：“李白只配给我脱靴子！”

玄宗笑对高力士：“为李供奉脱靴！”李白又指杨国忠：“请这位大人磨墨！”杨国忠气得正要发作，玄宗说：“国忠磨墨！”高力士艰难地为李白脱靴，杨国忠笨拙地为李白磨墨。
