Thinking of Home While Marching on Mountain-climbing Day
Up the mountain I’d force myself to go,
But nobody would bring me wine around.
Chrysanthemums of my homeland should blow
To beautify the far-off battleground.
The poet would drink and enjoy chrysanthemums at home on Mountain-climbing Day.
The poem “Thinking of Home While Marching on Mountain-climbing Day” is a five-part poem composed by the Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen. This poem, titled “Climbing the Heights on the Heavy Sun”, expresses not the usual festival homesickness, but the concern for the affairs of the country and the hardship of the people in the midst of war. The poem is simple in language, refined in conception and infinite in rhyme, and is a lyrical masterpiece with simple words and deep meaning.
