Listen to this article译文：我的话很容易理解，很容易施行。但是天下竟没有谁能理解，没有谁能实行。言论有主旨，行事有根据。正由于人们不理解这个启发，因此才不理解我。能理解我的人很少，那么能取法于我的人就更难得了。因此有道的圣人总是穿着粗布衣服，怀里揣着美玉。
本文流露出老子对当时的统治者失望的情绪。他提出的一系列政治主张，很容易理解、很容易实行，却没有任何人理解和实行。看来，他的那一套治天下的理想，只有他幻想中的“圣人”才能实现，在现实中是无法实现的。他不了解，任何治国方案，都必须适应统治阶层的的利益，否则，他们是不会采纳，不会去实行的。于是，老子就有了这一篇感慨之论。本章是专对掌权者而言的，不是对一般人说的。文中的“我”、“吾”等词，可谓之“道”的人格化。
《道德经》(第七十章)
吾言甚易知，
甚易行。
天下莫能知，
莫能行。
言有宗，
事有君。
夫唯无知，
是以不我知。
知我者希，
则我者贵。
是以圣人被褐怀玉。
Chapter 70
My words are very easy to understand, very easy to practice.
But no one is able to understand them,
And no one is able to practice them.
Words have authority.
Affairs have an ancestry.
It is simply because of their ignorance, that they do not understand me;
Those who understand me are few, thus I am ennobled.
For this reason,
The sage wears coarse clothing over his shoulders, but carries jade within his bosom.
