全诗写征夫之妻秋夜怀思远征边陲的良人，希望早日结束战争，丈夫免于离家去远征。虽未直写爱情，却字字渗透着真挚情意；虽没有高谈时局，却又不离时局。情调用意，都没有脱离边塞诗的风韵。
月色如银的京城，表面上一片平静，但捣衣声中却蕴含着千家万户的痛苦；秋风不息，也寄托着对边关思念的深情。读来让人怦然心动。结句是闺妇的期待，也是征人的心声。
开篇四句情景交融，浑成自然，被王夫之誉为“天壤间生成好句”(《唐诗评选》)。秋凉之夜，月华辉洒，砧声阵阵，寒风习习，真是一幅充满秋意的绝妙图景。然而，“一切景语皆情语也”(王国维《人间词话》)，前三句分写秋月、秋声和秋风，从视觉到听觉，再到触觉，都在为第四句的“情”作铺垫：月光是引发相思之情的媒介；捣衣声说明妇女们正在为戍边亲人作赶制征衣的准备(古时裁衣前必先将布帛捣平捣软)，其本身就包含着深厚的关切、思念之情；而秋风则最易逗起人的情思和愁绪。
对饱经离别之苦的人来说，这三者有一于此，便难以忍受了，何况它们全都聚集在一起？更何况在月白风清的夜晚，整个长安城都响彻那令人心碎的“万户”捣衣之声！这种时刻，有谁能不为这凄凉而又热烈的气氛所感染呢？“总是玉关情”，一语作结，力抵千钧。
情而冠以“玉关”，令人联想到遥远的边塞，益觉此情之深长；句首着一“总是”，将前三句目中所见、耳中所闻和肌肤所感囊括净尽，极力突出此情充塞于天地之间，无所不在。诗写到这里，整个气氛渲染已足，作者大笔一挥：“何日平胡虏，良人罢远征？”盼望战事的早日结束，向往和平安定的生活，这既是诗人的愿望，也是征妇的心声。有此一笔，不仅使全诗主旨更加深刻，而且使“玉关情”愈发浓厚。▲

At this moment, who can not be affected by the desolate and warm atmosphere? “It is always the jade pass”, which ends with a single word and is powerful.
The “Jade Pass” is named after the feeling, which is reminiscent of the remote frontier fortress, and helps to feel the depth of this feeling; The first sentence is “always”, which covers the first three sentences, including what you see in your eyes, what you hear in your ears and what you feel in your skin, and tries to highlight that this feeling is everywhere. When the poem is written here, the whole atmosphere has been fully rendered.
