On Yueyang Tower

Long have I heard of Dongting Lake,

Now I ascend the Yueyang Height.

Here eastern state and southern break;

Here sun and moon float day and night.

No word from friends or kinsfolk dear,

A boat bears my declining years.

War’s raging on the northern frontier,

Leaning on rails, I shed sad tears.

“On Yueyang Tower” is a poem by Du Fu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The first two lines of the poem are about what you see when you climb up to Yueyang Tower. The poem depicts the majestic and magnificent image of the vast and boundless waters of Dongting Lake in condensed language, outlining a meteorological picture. The neck couplet expresses the poet’s feelings of political hardship, wandering in the world and not meeting with talent. The last couplet expresses the poet’s sadness of watching his country being scattered and having no way to serve his country despite his passion. The poem is rich in meaning, and although the lyricism is low and depressed, it is natural and majestic.
