Song of the Clear Stream

Li Bai

The Clear Stream clears my heart;

Its water flows apart.

I ask the River New,

“Why transparent are you?”

On mirror bright boats hie;

Between the screens birds fly.

At dusk the monkeys cry;

In vain the wayfarers sigh.

This poem describes the scenery on the Clear Stream and the poet’s feeling on leaving it.

The poem “A Walk in the Clear Stream” is a poem written by Li Bai, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. The first six lines describe the clarity of the water in Qingxi from different angles, while the last two lines show the sad atmosphere. The whole poem creates a sad and desolate realm of silence, implying the poet’s love for clarity and aversion to turbidity, revealing the poet’s loneliness and despondency because he is far from home and misses his hometown, as well as the poet’s unspeakable depression and sadness in his heart with the talent to help the world.
