A Widow
Li Jinfa
My eyes screened by disheveled hair
Cannot see disgust in the air,
Nor the blood flowing in stream,
Nor the dead buried in his dream.
Slowly come mosquitoes and insects into night
Beyond the corner of the wall in sight.
The wind roars behind my innocent ear,
In the wilderness shivering cowherds appear.
With a glade of grass fine
I waft with the Spirit Divine.
With my grief only the wafting bees are impressed,
Like a cascade hanging from a cliff blessed.
My grief is then driven away and shed
With fallen leaves red.
In a pile of movement beyond belief
Is hidden a widow’s grief.
The fire of sunset sublime
Cannot burn her grief of the time
Into ashes, which flies away through the chimney long
To dye back the feather of a crow set free,
Perching on the rock, listening to the roaring sea,
And a ship wrecked sailor’s song.
My withered skirt murmurs its complaint like a bard
Wandering by Autumn’s graveyard,
Without a tear
Dripping on the meadow far and near
To adorn the world sad and drear.
