Drinking on West Lake Rain or Shine

Su Shi

The brimming waves delight the eyes in sunny days;

The dimming hills present rare view in rainy haze.

West Lake may be compared to Beauty of the West,

Whether she is richly adorned or plainly dressed.

“Drinking on West Lake Rain or Shine” is a group of poems by Su Shi, a writer of the Song Dynasty. These two poems praise the beauty of West Lake and were written during the poet’s tenure as the commander of Hangzhou. The first poem is about the poet welcoming his guests in the morning sun and drinking with them in the evening rain, indulging in the rainy scenery of West Lake; the second poem is a comprehensive description of the diversity of the scenery of West Lake, comparing the beauty of Xi Shi to the beauty of West Lake. The second of them is widely circulated, especially the last two lines, which are considered to be an appropriate comment on West Lake.
