Evening View

Yuan Hongdao

The east wind blows, at Red Tower trees burst in bloom;

Alone on hilltop at sunset I fall in gloom.

I’m grieved to see the dust under the horse hoof rise

And turn into a mist before wayfarers’ eyes.

Below blue hills the sun is sinking by and by;

A frozen bird in dreary garden gives a cry.

By roadside sinks the monument of ancient day;

Before the hero’s tomb e’en the stone horse would neigh.
