咏史
高适[1]
尚有绨袍[2]赠，
应怜范叔[3]寒。
不知[4]天下士[5]，
犹作布衣[6]看。
注释：
[1] 高适：李白的同龄人。这首咏史诗写的是战国时期，魏国派须贾和范雎出使齐国，齐王赏了才子范雎，没有赏须贾。须贾回到魏国，诬告范雎通齐。范被打得死去活来，逃到秦国，后来做了丞相，改名张录，威震天下。魏国派须贾来秦进贡。范雎穿破旧布衣去见须贾。须贾可怜他贫寒，送他一件丝棉袍。后来得知范是丞相，立刻匍匐请罪。范却因为他赠绨袍，没有对他进行报复。这是中国历史上一个以德报怨的故事，说明古代知识分子的气度。
[2] 绨袍：丝绵袄。
[3] 范叔：指范雎。此两句讲的是须贾不知道范雎是秦国宰相，认为他仍是一介贫士，赠送给他绨袍的故事。
[4] 不知：不识，不了解。
[5] 士：人才。
[6] 布衣：粗布衣服，指普通百姓。

Gao Shi
The envoy gave a silken gown
To one on whom he looked down,
Mistaking the prime minister
For a poor plain-clothed commoner.
唐代诗人高适所做《咏史》是一首咏史绝句。高适通过写古人赠绨袍的故事来比喻现在，表达了对有才华的贫寒人士得不到同情、重视的悲愤情绪。
Gao Shi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, has written a poem entitled “On Reading History”. By writing the story of an ancient man who gave a coarse robe to compare with the present, Gao Shi expresses his sorrow and anger for the poor and talented people who are not given any sympathy and attention.
