辛弃疾
有客慨然谈功名，因追忆少年时事，戏作。
壮岁旌旗拥万夫，
锦襜突骑渡江初。
燕兵夜娖[1]银胡䩮[2]，
汉箭朝飞金仆姑。
追往事，
叹今吾，
春风不染白髭须[3]。
却将万字平戎策，
换得东家种树书。

Partridges in the Sky
Xin Qiji
While young, beneath my flag I had ten thousand knights;
With these outfitted cavaliers I crossed the river.
The foe prepared their silver shafts during the nights;
During the days we shot arrows from golden quiver.
I can’t call those days back
But sigh over my plight;
The vernal wind can’t change my hair from white to black.
Since thwarted in my plan to recover the lost land,
I’d learn from neighbors how to plant fruit trees by hand.

“Partridges in the Sky” is a lyric by Xin Qiji of the Song Dynasty. This lyric profoundly summarizes the tragic encounter of a famous anti-jin general who has no way to serve his country and whose ambition cannot be rewarded. The first piece of the poem starts from the heroic spirit, depicting the image of a young hero who leads the righteous army, rides a sturdy and fast horse, wears a short embroidered coat, breaks through the defense line of the Jin soldiers and fights with them, which is generous and impassioned; the second piece expresses the realistic sentiment, writing about the ambition and despondency of the situation after the southern crossing, revealing the grievance and sorrow in a witty and deep, heartbreaking and depressing. The two pieces of the lyric are strongly contrasting, and the emotions are obviously jumping, while the structure is compact and completed in one go.
