Pomegranate Flowers

Zhu Xi

Pomegranates in the fifth moon dazzle the sight;

Among the branches you perceive their seeds pearl-bright.

But this is a place where no cabs nor horses cross;

You see only reds fallen pellmell on green moss.

The poem “Pomegranate Flowers” is a poem by Han Yu of the Tang Dynasty (or a poem by Zhu Xi of the Song Dynasty, which is a mistake of later generations). The first two lines of the poem indicate the time of the year, outlining the lush and rosy scene of pomegranate blossoms in May; the second two lines indicate the place, indicating that the pomegranate blossoms are not appreciated and thus the beauty is silent and falling, euphemistically expressing the poet’s lonely state of mind. The whole poem describes the scenery freshly and naturally, and implies the philosophy of life in the description of objective scenery.
