Retaining Spring
· To Mume Flowers

Shi Dazu
Strolling along your streams,
What can I do but hang my grief and dream
On moonlit mist-veiled tree?
The vernal water threads through the twilight.
Of longing for you can I be free?
You have confided your love to me,
So I’ve lost labor in dreaming of verse bright.
It is said spring’s as sentimental as you,
Retained by fragrance beyond the bamboo.

注释:
The poet has personified the mume flower and speaks to her as if she were his love.

Shi Dazu –

The poet Shi Dazu wrote this piece in the Southern Song Dynasty. The first piece is about enjoying plum blossoms under the moon on the stream, and the spring moon breaks the dusk with a sense of dynamism, turning stillness into movement, which is interesting. The next piece is about the memories and reveries under the moon, where the lyricist looks at the flowers with emotion, and his complex feelings of resentment, pain, disappointment and sadness come out together. The last two lines show that the lyricist’s chanting of plum blossoms seems to have a special meaning, but the lyricist has not made it clear, probably leaving it to the thoughtful reader to explore the subtleties of his heart song. This small order does not write the form but the spirit, not to take the matter but to take the meaning, not to reveal a word of what is chanted, the whole piece does not see the word plum but everywhere plum in, as the saying goes, “without a word to get all the wind flow”. The meaning of the words is deep and subtle, and the mood of the words is down and low, and the whimsical and clever words are appropriate and light, which is indeed a handsome product among the words.
