Listen to this article

Artist: Teresa Teng (鄧麗君, テレサ・テン) •Also performed by: Faye Wong
Song: 翠湖寒 (Cuì hú hán)

At the wintry jade green lake

I have been at the jade green lake [there] in the cold of winter
I left behind my feelings
[that were] poetry like painting like [and] dreamy like an illusion
That was me that was my first love

Day after day [and] night after night [I am still] reminiscing
The misty drizzle at the jade green lake
My heart my feelings [still unchanged] as old times
He my puppy love is he my puppy love still [carrying] the same [feelings]

I have been at the jade green lake [there] in the cold of winter
I left behind my feelings
[that were] poetry like painting like [and] dreamy like an illusion
That was me that was my first love

Day after day [and] night after night [I am still] reminiscing
The misty drizzle at the jade green lake
My heart my feelings [still unchanged] as old times
He my puppy love is he my puppy love still [carrying] the same [feelings]

Author’s comments:
翠湖寒: What is the character 寒 doing there? Is this part of a place name? But then 翠湖 exists on its own later on. I am completely stumped. I was very tempted to read it as “I have experienced coldness at … lake” but despite the melancholic tone of the lyrics, this is inconsistent with how she remembers her first love. So I am treating it as “desolate”. Please correct me if you know what is meant by this.

人兒他 This comes across of an expression of endearment, a bit like “boyfriend-chan” in Japanese I am guessing. Again, please correct me if I got this wrong
