Man jiang hong:

Shown to Fourth Sister

Xu Can

By the blue sea and reedy creek,

Gone is another year, parted in the snap of a finger.

Before my eyes I see weary willows turn yellow,

Plaintive peach blossoms lose their rouge.

We often hoped to greet each other on a lamplit night,

But always meet under the moon by the palms and pomegranates.

The dying lamp calls forth half a lifetime’s sadness,

All expressed on this night.

In the lotus-picking pond

The fragrant waves are sobbing;

On the grass-treading path

All traces of aroma are gone.

I’m pained by the misty desolation where are

The splendid rafters of our old home?

Delicate are our ancestors’ phoenix plumes, early the foundations they laid;

Now disheveled is the cicada coiffure, forlorn the lintel of the door.

As I stroke the silver stand and play the jade flute,

Every note drips blood.
