【Simple Translation】

This poem was written by Du Fu after he entered Shu, expressing his feelings of being in a foreign land. “This is a landscape painting set in a frame, with ink on the paper and color in the picture, which has a fascinating charm. Look, the river is full of blue waves, revealing the white plume of water birds, skimming the surface of the river, what a pleasant scenery! Full of verdant mountains, flowers all over the red incomparable, just like a burning fire, how beautiful, how brilliant! The white of the birds’ plumes against the blue of the river, the blue and white reflecting each other; the red of the flowers against the green of the mountain, the green and red competing with each other. The word “more than” is used to show the white color of the plume of the bird by the blue color of the river, which is a deep painting; and the word “want” is used to give the flower dynamics in anthropomorphism, which is swaying and colorful. The two verses describe the four scenes of river, mountain, flower and bird, and apply four colors of green, green, red and white respectively, which are fresh and pleasing to the eyes. However, the poet’s intention is not here, and the poem continues with a steep turn, sighing “This spring is passing again, when is the year of return? The three words “see and pass” in the line directly point to the time of writing the poem. The scenery in late spring and early summer can be considered beautiful, but unfortunately the years have passed and the return is far away, so instead of attracting the interest of playing, it evokes the sentiment of wandering.

The artistic feature of this poem is that it uses a happy scene to write a sorrowful one, and the only way to contrast it with the poet’s eagerness to return is to speak of the harmony of spring. It does not let the sentiment of longing for home come out directly from the scenery, but uses the difference between objective scenery and subjective feelings to contrast the poet’s deep homesickness, which has a unique charm.
