Vietnamese International Student Nguyen Chuong Giang: Achieving A Better Self on A Beautiful Campus

Listen to this article

Nguyen Chuong Giang (阮长江), a young man from Vietnam, is a first-year graduate student in Communication Studies at the School of Journalism and Communication at Wuhan University. At the age of 27 this year, his first stop in China was Wuhan University.

“My name is Nguyen Cheung Kong and I come from Hanoi, Vietnam. My first time in Wuhan was in September 2019, when I came to study linguistics at the School of Literature at Wuhan University. After completing my Master’s degree in linguistics, I also want to continue studying journalism and communication courses at the School of Journalism at Wuhan University”

Unlike the excitement and anxiety of his first visit to Wuhan University four years ago, this time as a graduate student, Nguyen Chuong Giang has come back to Wuhan University with a “feeling of returning home”. He said he was fortunate to have chosen to study in China firmly at the beginning.

“When I was an undergraduate, I interned at Vietnam National Television for a period of time. I met many classmates who were students of Vietnam National University, many of whom studied Chinese and studied various aspects of China, including language, culture, economy, geography, and so on. They were very outstanding, and their grades were also very good. Moreover, they all had the idea of studying in China. Influenced by them, I really wanted to study in China with them at that time.”

After passing a series of exams and applications, and finally being admitted to Wuhan University, Nguyen Chuong Giang was surprised to find that the university’s educational resources could be so abundant.

“After arriving at Wuhan University, I found that the requirements for students here are higher than those of Vietnamese universities. The design of the training program is particularly helpful for students’ research directions. For example, my research direction in linguistics is’ sociolinguistics and network language ‘debate, and there will be many corresponding courses in the training program to help me grasp my future research direction.”

Nguyen Chuong Giang provided several examples to illustrate how satisfactory the current curriculum design is to him. He said that here, he felt his interest in academic research was greatly stimulated and he truly learned a lot of useful knowledge:

“The individualized teaching of higher education at Wuhan University has given me comprehensive improvement. In my undergraduate studies, I studied business administration and did some quantitative statistical analysis. Now that I am studying advertising communication at the School of Journalism and Communication, I can choose many good courses. The teacher will teach you how to obtain data, process data, and visualize data in class. These courses are very helpful for my future research, and I can truly learn a lot of data points Analysis of knowledge and technology.”

Nguyen Chuong Giang said that when he applied to the school, he knew that the major of Journalism and Communication was the flagship major of Wuhan University, with a strong faculty. So, when applying, he “locked in” his current mentor – Teacher Zhou. Now, Nguyen Chuong Giang has achieved his wish and become a student of Teacher Zhou, and he feels very lucky.

“Because we are all freshmen, the teacher will help us develop research plans based on our own interests from the beginning. The teacher will send us valuable books early on, introducing the topics in advertising communication, which fields are new, and which are research co built. They will guide us to discover what topics we want to do, find the topics we want to do, and then explore in-depth research. Teacher Zhou is very kind and friendly to her It’s like talking to my mother, she has the same care for us as her mother.”

Nguyen Chuong Giang also found that Chinese classmates seem to have various “martial arts skills” in their hearts, all of whom are versatile. This also inspired him to try and explore more possibilities in life.

“A few days ago, I went to the welcome party of the School of Journalism and saw my classmates performing on the show. I thought everyone was very talented. This made me feel that college life is very rich and colorful. My classmates are all skilled in literature and martial arts, and I often shoot various things with them.”

Nguyen Chuong Giang had long heard that Wuhan University is one of the most beautiful universities in China. On the Luojia Mountain, the forests are dyed in autumn and the cherry blossoms are blooming in spring. He said he felt very happy studying and living in this beautiful university. He also believes that this study abroad experience will definitely lead to a better self.

Nguyen Chuong Giang: “The School of Journalism is at the end of Sakura Avenue, and the end of Sakura Avenue is my home. Studying here is my lifelong choice without regret.”
