Andy Lau – 来生缘 ~ lyrics + English Translation

Listen to this article

Artist: Andy Lau (劉德華, 刘德华, Lau Tak-wah)

Yuanfen in the next life

Seeking here and searching there [in vain] soundlessly and motionlessly [it] vanished
[No matter how much I tried] [I] just could not regain memory unable to retrieve factual truth that had been once abandoned
[As] a lifetime an incarnation passed you abandoned [it] drop by drop
Painful suffering painful grief painful heartache painful regret of having lost you

Perhaps parting is not easy perhaps caring for and loving one another is forbidden
Painful suffering painful grief painful heartache painful regret of having lost myself
Feelings run deep [yet] yuanfen shallow a wish could be fulfilled that we needed to treasure you and I both knew
[We] can only bide the next incarnation when we [may] embark on the beginning of our shared story

Successions of lives and incarnations [tumbling] in an endless and boundless dream
Once in a while [it] churns up a chronicle [and] the story between you and me resurfaces
Footage after footage of memory memory that has become meaningless
Painful suffering painful grief painful heartache painful regret of having lost you

Perhaps parting is not easy perhaps caring for and loving one another is forbidden
Painful suffering painful grief painful heartache painful regret of having lost myself
Feelings run deep [yet] yuanfen shallow a wish could be fulfilled that we needed to treasure you and I both knew
[We] can only bide the next incarnation when we [may] embark on the beginning of our shared story

Author’s comments:
来生缘 Lit: 来生 “coming life”, “next life”; 缘 “yuanfen”, this is a concept that does not translate into English, although routinely treated as “fate”, “destiny” or “serendipity”, these terms fall well short of “yuanfen” which is actually absorbed into the English language. Yuanfen is all those “fate” and related ideas, but beyond that there is a notion of connections, entanglement, not just applicable to lovers, but between friends, animals and even events.

寻寻觅觅在无声无息: 寻寻觅觅 suggests looking and searching repeatedly and desperately; 无声 Lit: “without sound”; 无息 “without sign of life”

生生世世 Lit: 生 is abbreviated from 生命 “life”; 世 is an “incarnation” within the Buddhist belief of rebirth. As written using repeating characters, to me, it is about a succession of lives and reincarnations.

日记 Lit: “a journal” or “diary” but in the context of this song and successive incarnations, this is about long term history over many reincarnations like a chronicle kept by the gods.
